330d no temp gauge
find this really annoying, how do people judge when the engine is up to temp and safe to use your heavy right foot?!! Are the only options obd dongle or secret obc menu (both of which are a pain to use regularly)?

Put the hidden menu on and then do a drive you do regularly from home, eg. going to work and you will be able to roughly gauge from that at what point of the route or how long its taken to get up to temp. Then in future you will have a decent idea of when its warmed up enough.
Remember oil takes longer to get to temp than the coolant though |

It's a pain in the arse, I mean how hard would it have been for BMW to put a temp gauge in? Every other manufacturer manages! That's me got two cars now that the first you know your overheating is a bloody warning message, nearly as much use as the oil pressure warning light that's only purpose seems to inform you that your engine is mulered lol

I agree with the op why put a fuel consumption gauge when it's useless. Obviously if you press the throttle more fuel will be used. They should have sacked that gauge off and fitted either oil or coolant temp gauges.

It is annoying, this is the first car I've had without a coolant temp gauge, in contrast my M5 has both coolant & oil temp gauges, the oil takes much longer to get up to temp than the coolant though.

This is probably not the best way to judge but i find if my car can instantly tell me my oil level, its up to adequate temp. If it spins and spins (when the car is cold or when it has just been started) I would be a bit more gentle.
P.s i have non-idrive, 4pot. |

I have an factory oil temp gauge on my 330i which I am pleased with as I typically try to ensure I have one on all my cars. I wouldn't say the M3 is the only one that requires one, you should not be booting any vehicle that doesn't have its fluids warmed up correctly. Only thing I do find annoying is the complete lack of a coolant gauge!

I put a cluster from a 335i with the temp needle in mine. Works perfectly apart the red dot which can be removed by swapping the eeprom chip.
If you put a 335 clock in a car without changing the chip first, make sure it has less miles than yours! The cluster will show the higher mileage of the two (car or cluster). |
