I have the LCI tails on my E92 and no you won't need to upgrade the firmware. I had mine coded at http://www.roadracetech.com/
Check the vendors marketplace for the LCI light. Hope that helps

Other than the coding, are the new LCI tailights plug and play? Any new/special wiring needed?

You will need a harness. Vendors who sells the LCI tails will have the harness for sell as well.
