My hunch would be to use an extension cable with a low clearance connector. The space between the AUX/USB connections and the lid of the closed armrest is not very much... maybe an inch or so.

Yes, but that shows no frame of reference for the closed clearance. Since we know the connection will be in the exact location of the current AUX connection, we can safely assume the same amount of clearance when the lid is closed, no?

Works like a charm...
I took delivery of my 335 last week and just received the correct cable today. I live in Germany and got my car through the military sales program - it was the first one delivered with the 6FL, so there was a little confusion on the cables - be sure yours has the two-pronged cable with aux and USB at one end and the iPod connector at the other. Mine was delivered with just a short USB extension cable. The dealer told me that the cable will cost extra in the states, not sure if that will hold true, but she paid for mine and express mailed to me.
A USB thumb drive works fine - I used a 1GB stick I had while I waited for the correct iPod cable. Now that I have the iPod cable, the whole thing works great - exactly like I thought it would. I don't have iDrive, so it takes a while to search through albums, artists, etc. but I usually just use playlists, and that works great. Right now, no complaints at all - well worth a few extra hundred $$, IMHO. |

Remember - I'm in Germany and bought through military sales - totally separate from U.S. dealers - that's just what she was told and I wanted to give you all a head's up so you can check with your dealer before the car is delivered and there are no surprises.

Yes, but the shortest cable I was able to find was 3 feet long and I didn't want to have that much bulk in the armrest box. I was able to find an alternative retractable cable from Belkin that is much more compact. See http://www.techonweb.com/products/productdetail.aspx?id=C37322&src=NT

I'm doing PCD and I've been informed that the cable is automatically ordered there when they do the PDI. No extra cost.

Yeah, didn't mean to kill the messenger - sorry if it came off that way. The cable should be included with the system, similar to the way the headphones are included with the X5 entertainment system.

I am curious about the cable as well. I'm taking delivery of my car on Tuesday and I am now worried that the correct cable is NOT going to be there when I pick my car up. I also am ordering through the military car sales...but in the U.K. instead of Germany.

Checked with my UK dealer this week and he said the cable will definetly come with it in the UK. He has already taken delivery of a car with this option (inclduding cable) and invited me to go over and have a play with it, but haven't had a chance yet.
