Rx8s do well with seaform. What is the preferred method for ridding our d's of carbon (short the full take-apart)? Liquimoly?

If that's the case and its vacuum operated, can we just plug it up to keep the valve closed?

DieselDiner: I'd be thoroughly interested in a coding option or EGR delete! What tool are you using for your coding? I'll be picking up my 335d in 2-3 weeks and would like to be able to code too.

Thanks!
The EGR system in our cars is controlled by the computer. The computer even closes off the EGR system when the car is cold, to aid in quicker transistion to operating temp. So - to effectively close off the EGR system (besides mechanically closing off the system), it would also be necessary to modify the programming to eliminate the EGR control and the codes that would be thrown.

In the UK (and Europe), there are suppliers that offer this service (EGR block and/or removal and reprogramming). I don't think we yet have the service over here, although I think there is a shop in Toronto that has the capability (he already offers DPF removal and coding, so I would think EGR would be easy by comparison).

For straightforward coding, I think a lot of people use the BT cable. It might also be possible to use less expensive cables, but I'm not very up to speed on it. There is a coding section on the board, spend some time with those guys and they will get you up to speed in a hurry!

That would be worth the drive north for sure.

M335d, when you move forward with your plans listed, lets try to get a DIY going if you have the time. It would definitely be helpful.

From posts I've seen this never happens on the X535d. Light engine loads seem to be the reason behind it. The 335d weighs less than the X5. Liqui Moly has some interesting products for diesel engines.

It's probably too far for me, but if you guys are close enough, I think it would be great to ring this guy up and kick his tires for the knowledge of the community.

Thanks Joseph. Canada is a bit of a haul for me too. The reality is I probably will not be making the trip any time soon.

One would think if a shop in Canada can do this why not a shop here? VS, VAC or the like should have the wherewithall to come up with something, but I suspect given the limited market they will not spend the time uless someone wants to spend serious $'s to pay them to do the R&D.

It would be interesting to know if the shop in Canada wrote their own program for the EGR delete or if this is an off-the-shelf program from a European tuner. Perhaps someone in Canada considering this mod can inquire about this with the shop???

My first thought was RENNtech, but I haven't seen anything from them to lead me to believe that they would be working on it. Maybe PR can inquire given his relationship.

Angry 2011 335d Engine Malfunction / Reduced Power

I have a 2011 335d, acquired new in May 2011. I've always driven it carefully and responsibly, followed all service requirements, and have NEVER abused it. Since new, I've been back to the selling dealership with issues with the trunk not closing in cold weather, and intermittent episodes of the navigation system not defaulting to the last used screen, upon vehicle start up. I've allowed myself to mostly overlook these issues, in light of the fact that I get incredible fuel economy and otherwise enjoy(ed) the car.

Last week (1-3-2013), at 56k miles, I was on Interstate 95 North, when the "Engine Malfunction / Reduced Power" light came on & the car slowed to almost a crawl. I safely got it to a BMW center (BMW Gallery - Norwood, MA), which then diagnosed as follows:
"You have a bad injector - it's a $1,200.00 job. You'll likely also need a new cylinder head, which is a $10,000.00 job. However, we won't know for sure about the cylinder head until after we replace the injector & see what happens."
Of course, my new car warranty expired at 50k miles. Needless to say I was nothing short of ENRAGED, given that I'm still paying for the car & had been planning to keep it for a few years & crank on 200k+ miles (thinking diesels 'run forever').
BMW did cover the replacement of the (cylinder #3) injector via the Emissions Warranty, and the car seems to be running ok for now. However, I feel like I'm driving around in a ticking time bomb, not knowing if/when I'm going to have this issue again, and have to replace the cylinder head, etc.
On Wednesday 1-9-2013, I spoke with a BMW North America "Resolution Specialist" by the name of Rachel. I explained the history, and my concerns. I explained that I'm now afraid to drive this car, and don't plan to keep it. I stated that BMW can potentially keep me as a customer if they put me in a comparably equipped gasoline-powered 3xx at the same payment, or agree to an early termination of my finance contract & I return the vehicle, with no further financial obligation on my part. Rachel stated that BMW will not consider putting me in another vehicle, or consent to early contract termination. Further, she stated "If the cylinder head malfunctions in your vehicle, it will default to 'Customer Pay', as your vehicle is out of warranty." Thanks alot, BMW. This is what I get for investing in what I thought was a quality product and quality customer experience!
So, I ask you this. Would YOU purchase a late model 335d if the Carfax report showed an engine rebuild between 50-70k miles? I know I wouldn't! Seems that BMW wants me to be "stuck" with several more years of payments, along with the potential for a $10k+ repair bill which could pop up at any moment. #FAIL #BMWUNRELIABLE #SHOULDASTUCKWITHAMERICAN #NEVERAGAIN

Thanks for sharing your experience; please advise the diesel fuel brand you mostly used. Obviously you drove a lot (highway?), so not sure if the preferred brand was always available to you.

I actually liked dealing with BMW Gallery of Norwood.
I did all my research on the 335d and read about their carbon build up issues. However, it did not deter me from still purchasing the 335d. However, I had to buy one with CPO warranty.

I hope BMW gets to the bottom of this "technically". What in the world is causing this carbon build up bullish!t. They need to redesign their parts to resolve this issue!

My car is also at the dealership now for 4 weeks. Started with check engine light for injector failure. So far injector was replaced and they advised check engine light came back. So BMW NA told them to replace the computer. That seems to have fixed the check engine light issue...however, they did not release the car yet since it didn't get its blessings from BMW NA. They want the dealership now to replace the high pressure fuel pump (not sure why).

I did bring up the carbon build up issues, cylinder head replacement, blah blah blah to the excellent Service Advisor's attention. The tech, who owns a diesel himself (not 335d) mentioned carbon build up is not the issue..."I have the updated EGR cooler..." Etc. I hope he is right about my car. I'll update the posts when I get my car back.

The 335d is an excellent car and its very reliable. BMW needs to focus their attention to permenantly fix this 1 issue (carbon)!

I have only researched the 335D for a week before buying one yesterday...but after reading about the carbon build up issues no way I was buying this car without the CPO extended warranty!...too risky.

Reminds of the days when the early E46 M3's were throwing rod bearings and of course BMW initially blamed it on the owners(accusing people of money shifts even to the owners with SMG which wont allow over-rev's)...I wrote a long letter to Roundel at the time and a month later there was a recall and the engine warranty was extended to 100K miles...thats right I will take the credit for making this happen haha...

BMW should extend the engine warranty to 100K miles for all 335D owners!

Now that you are a 335d owner, maybe you will write a long letter to Roundel? :-)

I am doing my own research on carbon build up and Diesel engines; based on Ford diesels, it is bad for the engine to have an average speed below 35mph (total miles / total engine run time). It causes serious carbon build up. They even have the total engine runtime counter on their dashboards. Interesting...

So to be clear,,, because your car at 56k miles had a bad injector requiring repalcement, which was subsenquently taken care of under warranty and that under the off-chance your car "might" need a cylinder head replacement during your ownership period, you expect BMW to essentially buy-back your car or give you another car??? And because you chose not to buy an extended warranty and because BMW told you they were not going to release you from your loan agreement or give you another car that somehow equates to a "FAIL" on their part? Sorry, but I don't think so...

BTW, my car experienced the trunk closure issue during cold weather. It was not the trunk, it was a computer glitch which was subsequently fixed with a reprgoraming of the DME - all taken care of under warranty.

PS: All direct injection engines experience carbon build-up to include the gasoline powered 335i. So in other words, fleeing to the gasoline power equivalent would not have solved that "potential" problem for you. But then again,,, that's why God invented walnut blasters.
