Talking New watch

Having changed to the spare wheel (thank God they're still supplied by some) after the tyre 'blow out' fiasco. Here's what I picked up

If I wore that watch

I'd have to wrap my arm in bubble wrap

Gorgeous

Thank you all.

Alan - it is indeed a 5712.

The excitement of unwrapping the watch got the better of me as I elbowed the small adjustment pin which fell on the floor and disappeared (I should have left the pin alone). I just couldn't see it anywhere and assumed it'd disappeared underneath the sideboard

I visited the Patek store, they told me one watch = one pin and that they couldn't get me another. I can somewhat understand they want to avoid giving the pins away!

Luckily my watch dealer promised to source me another. I found it in the end resting in a cavity at the bottom of the sideboard but not before the motivation from uncooperative attitude at the store had me jacking up the furniture using the 4x4 jack I'd used earlier

WOW ! that is a special watch wear it in good health .

Did you buy it in the UK ?

I have been having a massive sale of watches and have been trying to decide what I really want next , The Patek is close to the top off my list.

I understand it is almost impossible to get a deal on a patek , but if you have any advice please pm me

Very jealous !

Oddly, I don't really fancy a watch with complications - a Calatrava would do me nicely.

A lot of us, males especially, take pleasure in well constructed and precisely made objects. In these days of electronics, it is piss easy to make a very accurate watch but to have a highly accurate watch (though not as good as the best electronic ones) made from mechanical moving parts is something to be respected and admired and requires exquisite design and tiny moving parts.

When you then add complications into basically the same size of watch (like phases of the moon, perpetual calendar, etc.) it just becomes a hell of a lot harder and even more impressive. Patek are one of the oldest Swiss watchmakers and one of the best, so the desirability of the brand just increases.

Add on a slight restriction on supply against demand, glossy advertising and then quadruple the price to help exclusivity which is unfortunate for those who want such gorgeous time pieces for their own sake rather than for the exclusivity and wealth they indicate.

This isn't a slag, I'd still love a Calatrava!

The packaging is absolute tat!
It looks like it has come out of a vending machine at Gt. Yarmouth.

Lovely watch, but I would have been gutted opening it.

My last watch, a Glycine came in a hand made wooden box and felt special.

Similar to this......

Lovely watch though mate, really do like it.

I'll probably get flamed for this but that's an absolutely absurd amount of money to spend on a watch, just don't get it! Each to their own I suppose.

scooba - got it through my usual source.
Let's just say the sale of this watch was made worth while from my point of view.

Kev - Alan has explained very well. Watch makers charge what they want in the name of exclusivity. Interestingly for some brands the difference between steel models and precious metal models isn't even relative.

Alan - Calatrava is a beautiful watch ... I am a little biased though :-D I like the simpler and cleaner looking watches too. I think you'd like the Breguet Classique.

Gizze - I haven't photographed the real presentation box. Its very pretty and weighs an absolute ton, its still in bubble wrap/cardboard transport box. The box I've photographed is a transit box. Consumers don't usually see these but this is how most watches come to the retailer, who at the POS transfer the watch to its presentation box.

Craig & Davy - I respect your opinions. Thank you for wishing me well.
