Question New York For New Years!

What's up guys?
I'm here looking to get some advice, comments, and suggestions.
My girlfriend's completely in love with the thought of New York in the winter.
She's always wanted to go and always wanted to see the city and snow.
From what I understand from television, New York/TimeSquare is the place to be on New Years Eve
I was thinking, what would possibly be a better christmas gift than a trip to New York for a few days around New Years!
She's been asking me to take her to Big Bear, which is a local ski resort here in southern cali, for some time now.
This week we just had a huge storm(for SoCal standards) and i'm sure that will be a good time but New York would be on a completely different level.
She's been pretty good to me so i'd really like to do something in return.

So the plan is, sometime betweem 12/28 - 1/4 I want to stay somewhere in New York close enough to the action of TimeSquare, but doesn't have to be too close that we can't get away from it.
I haven't been in quite some time and when I was there it was more for work than for travel pleasure.
Other than TimeSquare on New Years, what else is there to do and see.
I have an exgirlfriend that lives there and from what she tells me you can pretty much get around anywhere and everywhere by taxi and/or subway.
I don't really want to rent a car and have to deal with traffic unless its completely necessary.
So please, lets hear your suggestions:
for the

Anywho, to the OP, if you want to be here for New Years, make sure you get a spot around noon on New Years Eve..it gets STUPID packed before the ball drops...then count on waiting til around 5AM to get back to whereever you are going to....

Ive done it 2 years in a row, and its a bit nerve wracking..I think I will spend it with my friends and get blasted at the house and watch it from the TV lol

That town is hectic on a normal day, let alone New Years, I've never ventured into the city on New Years, but if you do end up going, have fun, I enjoy NY every time I go.

I would skip Time Square on New Year's Eve if I were you. It gets mad crazy there. People actually pee on the street cause it's so damn crowded and hard to get around.

About the transportation, MTA (Mass Transit Authority) FTMFW!!! You definitely do not need a rental car or taxi for that matter. The train will take you all over.

I know your girlfriend will LOVE NYC.

GL and that's an AWESOME gift, IMO.

I wouldn't go to NYC just for New Year's and then leave. NYC has so much to offer, I would get here like a week earlier, and just see the sights, then to end it off with a bang you have the New Year's Eve celebration.

BTW, this is NYC...you will definetly not need a rental car. We have one of the largest mass transit systems in the world.

Yeah for sure!
that's what i'm asking for.
I don't want to come up for just New Years, I want to be a total tourist and see all there is to see.
Really make the most of the trip
What do you suggest?

When I go to the city it's usually for the restaurants. Of course, there are the touristy areas, but I don't find them appealing. My advice is to just explore everything you can in your short time there.

Hey...largest doesn't neccessarily imply the "prettiest." I happen to like my "ugly" transit system.
