I know a handful of people with high mileage BMW's so I'm really not scared that mine is nearing that 100k marker, kinda proud actually.

But with that in mind I was hoping to start a conversation here on what people would suggest doing/checking to ensure the most out of their car/engine.

I'll state the obvious and let some of you fill in the rest

Oil Change
Air/Fuel Filter
Tire Rotation
Check Brake Pads/Rotors

I'll stop there due to me still being a Bimmer Newb & Laziness

What else would you all update/check/replace at the 100,000mi marker?

BMW's lifetime tranny fluid should be changed too. Well, my SA says so. If you extend their free maint. they do it at 100,000 miles.

Coolant flush (also a "lifetime" fluid), aux belt, brake fluid, rear diff fluid and spark plugs. Check power steering fluid probably.

You should do all the things that are done on any car and at that
frequency. This means all fluids and filters.
Try to look up the Mike Miller old school maintenance schedule
Google Mike Miller BMW.
Extended oil changes aren't so good either about 7500 miles or once
a year is what many on here consider adequate.

I plan to do the waterpump and thermostat proactively on my car at 100K if it has not already died by then. Plus any other suspect cooling system parts, though this seems to be less of an issue with the e9X compared to the e46.

I also have no doubt that I will be doing a suspension refresh around that point as well, the dampers and bushings will be past thier best.

All fluids and filters. I always do spark plugs then as well. Since your car is an early model start looking around for dry rot in the hoses and vacuum lines.

My 100k maintenance item included trading in the out of warranty car lol

1.Transmission fluid and filter change
2. Spark Plugs
3. Differential Fluid
4. Brake Fluid Replace
5. Power Steering Drain and refill
6. Radiator Flush and refill
7. Cabin Air Filter

Check:
Belts and rubber hoses.
Tires
Suspension bits, control arms, bushings
Brake pads and rotors
Wiper blades and Fluid
Battery

You're going to have to sift thru all the above suggestions and figure out which ones you may have already done too recently to warrant repeating. Some of the items (like brakes) you can wait for the system to generate an alert.

Between 95 and 110k the big ticket items I addressed:
Spark Plugs (mpg improved to where it used to be)
Tranny drain/fill/filter (expensive, drain not flush, no change in how it drives)

Normal wear/tear items: Oil, Tires, Rear Brakes, Starter

I had already done cooling fluid, brake fluid, steering fluid, fuel filter, water pump, fuel pump awhile back, so even if they were scheduled they did not need.

I would add O2 sensors as I recently learned are estimated to be an 80,000 mile part. 4 of them, 2 before cats and 2 after. At 135,000 miles my before cats were reading really slow and caused some issues with running rich at times and lean at other times. Still have not changed by after cats but plan on doing so soon. The car really came back to life in terms of MPG and responsiveness.

All the after cat sensors do is check to make sure the catalytic converters are functional - if they are not setting CELs, then there is no reason to replace them.

I'm thinking of having this done too.. May I ask how much in total you spent altogether?

Change all fluids, cabin air filter, spark plugs
Don't replace the O2 sensors. Unless there is a code.

You can get them for 177 each from Tischer. Because I had some codes I paid a couple of hours of labor to troubleshoot a MAF problem and got stuck with having to pay 2 hours of labor 109 per and 244 per sensor so it was pricey. I think it is an fairly easy DIY so you can save some bucks.

Thanks. Must be why the mechanic just cleaned them off and put them back in instead of insisting I change them out like he did the precat sensors.

Should we be worried about the water pump failures? I am debating if I want to get the geico mechanical warranty before I past the deadline. It will be good for 7yr/100k. I dont want to be at 50k and then have the pump fail and I KNEW it would fail. Then I would need to pay 1300 out of pocket.

It will not fail at 50k, but after 70k its probability of failure increases and reaches 1 (all water pump should have failed at this mileage, so to speak) a little above 100k. Depending on the price of your warranty and if they don't consider 80k+ miles water pump failure as a wear and tear, that can repay a significant part of your warranty
