M135i Rival
Depending on Price but looks like the M135i could have some competition:

4wd and £10k more expensive than the M135i? If i was doing that i'd go RS3, which is also 4wd and £10k more expensive than the M135i.
Nope, i'd still buy the M135i. With a decent stereo, heated seats, and either gearbox.

355bhp and 40mpg...I'd love to see how close to that figure 'real world' driving would achieve. The family have the A180 AMG arriving next week - looks nice, but let's see if it drives as well as it looks (or MB claim it does)

If it's anything like the Wife's 2012 SLK she get nowhere near MB's 42 MPG claim. More like 31 MPG

from what ive read testing wise, its a bit too firm for the uk road network
i also think its going to be £39995 list, too expensive to compete with the m135i

Surely there not still fitting cementitious bands to their cars, you'd think BMW had moved away from that disaster.
I wonder if they'll start fitting granite rims soon,to avoid the cracks! The Merc looks a lot,lot better than the M135i,but not quids and quids better.

Looked fantastic in silver with all the AMG tinsel and the lipstick on it's chin and arse. However, terrible ride, very indirect feeling in the bends and the worst automatic gearbox I have ever experienced in my life. Stick it in manual and it felt like each command for a gear was as effective as writing a letter to the gearbox and sending 2nd class. I had such high hopes for it as well and I still look at them longingly thinking if only....

Yep, have to agree with what mowflow said. I was after a premium hatchback which would be easy enough for the missus to drive but still exciting enough to not put me to sleep and the pics of the A class looked stunning.
Unfortunately EVERY review I've read of it has pretty much slated it for absolutely appalling ride quality (I swore I'd never go through that again after living with a BMW on run flats) and being quite dull to drive so while I really wanted to like it on looks alone, it looks like it's actually a turd rolled in glitter. Also the AMG is likely going to be £40k before options so your looking at mid 40's for a decent spec which is just silly money for a posh hatchback. |

"A little further information on pricing, a hot topic on the discussion thread that followed the original news piece. Our source says "the car will cost around £36K when ordering opens in April, not the £50K being estimated." So that's us told! The point is also made that the white car in the original press pics more or less reflects the standard spec for UK cars too, meaning the black 18-inch wheels and racy seats will both be standard."

A standard A250 has a basic price of £30k so it will be good going if they can get the AMG in at £36k. With options it's still over £40k though so far too much money for a hot hatch IMO. I'm not totally put off it, if Merc do some good deals on them I'll still have a look but my enthusiasm for it has definitely waned since it was first announced.
It's such a shame the M135i is so ugly (sorry M135i owners) otherwise the Merc wouldn't even get a look in. |

When I spec'd the A250 eb AMG it came in at a sniff over £30k. It's a pretty well spec'd car in standard form. Going on the pricing of the range at the moment I think £36k is a realistic figure and I doubt it would need to much added for most buyers. Maybe another £2k of extras. If they break the £40k limit they will be doomed.

While we're comparing to the M135i. Let's not forget the Merc is a 4 banger which is no match for the Lush BMW 6 pot motor.

Come on Del, all Merc drivers are too old to want 3 doors . Even Andrews SLS has a special compartment to put his pipe & slippers in (bless him, he thinks his sub is fucked, it's not a speaker, it's a pipe & slipper cubby-hole).
