Reading this thread makes me wonder if the upcoming 2014 m3/m4 that is supposed to have a turbo 6 instead of v8 will basically be our good ole n54 with a Procede like tune.

I think it's supposed to be a totally new engine - B58 or something like that.

For normal maintenance I switch to Map 0 & disable the steering wheels controls through my lap top.

It's just how the intake and exhaust and all those other little things are setup. Like the X5 3.0si has the same engine as me (N52) but that has 5 more hp (260 vs 255).

Anybody got any knowledge to the contrary?
Just some thoughts. It all depends how the government defines the requirements for additional emissions certifications because BMW does in fact have a lot of basic differences in N54 ratings when it comes to advertising.

The N54 in the 335i came in two flavors. The early N54 had more power then the later ones but the adds all say 300BHP/300FtLbs. The N54 PPK has its own power rating above the base N54 & the 335is has another + the 1M & Z4is with yet another. They also play a game of taking the ratings from different points on the RPM scale which can further blur the numbers.

Its generally true BHP (the advertised horsepower) is available up to about 431BHP in the N54 with just an adjustment of the ECU software (no hardware or E85 required) as shown by JB4 et al.

The fact remains based on actual dyno tests all the advertised horsepower numbers are low & simply arbitrary numbers based on BMW’s marketing needs.

If you leave the software on your ECU the dealer will know if they connect the diagnostic tester to your car. Cobb makes it easy to reflash the original software back on your ECU, and then the dealer has no way of knowing. Somewhere in the 7000 post in the thread below gets into this detail explaining why the dealer would not know. If you check out the Cobb site you will see it is pretty easy to do.

The JB4 does not put any software in the ECU its all self-contained in the piggy. If its left on the car & switched to Map 0 the OBI port is clear for BMW's service use. They can even update the factory firmware.

It can only be found if the tech searches for it, pulls the cabin air filter, the cowl & opens the ECU coffin

Which is what they are trained to do now.. If you have procede or jb4 remove it completely before service

The next time they find mine will be the first. If it was going in for major service it would be a good plan to remove it.

At a $100+ per shop hour they are not going on an Easter egg hunt just to go on a Easter egg hunt.

Thing is if they did find a piggy back in 99% of the time they would lose a service customer for their efforts & make the local Indy very happy.

I've read that the N54 "S" in the 1M has special downpipes with freer flowing cats. Apparently, these can be retrofitted onto other N54 cars.

I think there may be a temperature issue with the Z435is as well. The large underhood cavity giving better cooling.

Yeah i was thinking it was something like this which explained the hp difference. I understand not wanting to step on the toes of the 1m, so the z4is should've only had 320hp. And i was just thinking that wouldn't it have been cool if the 335is had 335hp?!

That's good to know. However it makes we wonder if even if they can't see the aftermarket software per se because you removed it prior to taking it in, if there's some sort of problem with the engine, turbos, etc., I'm sure they would do some more digging and be able to see some logs or something showing unusually high boost levels.

Why, based on typical dynos runs & factoring in 15% for drivetrain loss it has about 366BHP

All old data is reset, so the only see logs of the current setup. They will not know, but if you a fault code, it gets reset. So if you want to get service for a fault code, you have to remove the software and drive it until you get the code again.

My owners manual states that my 335is is rated 335hp. However the sticker on the window stated 320hp. Like some have stated, it's more of a BMW marketing thing.

You can get a lot of different HP numbers off the same dyno run, just read different places on the RPM scale.

That is correct.
I've had to do that twice.

Most recently last night. My car went into limp mode, bad crank sensor, no boost. Reflashed back to stock with my AP. Drove until it failed again.

At the dealer now. Driving a new F30 328i.
Interesting drive. Soft compared to my 335i with sport package an 19" wheels. Steering is okay. Stop start is growing on me.
Hate the front end. This car only looks good with the M-Sport front end.

That's interesting, I will have to look at mine too to see what it says. I guess i didn't realize they put hp numbers in the manual.

In my manual its on Page 246 under the reference section towards the back. My car was purchased in August of 2010 built in July. It could be that they later revised the manual (in fact I just went to BMW's website and downloaded the manual for my car and it does not have the engine data section in it).
