New VED rates (2010 onwards)

Anyone else concerned by this:

http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/road...charges/231720

Going forwards it's only going to get more and more expensive, it's not looking good for car enthusiasts.

£30 rise for the Beemer, £25 rise for the other car - not too worried.

Still annoying though.

Be keen to see what they'll do to soot flinging buses (on average 100 times worse than a car), trains, planes and the worst offenders, industry.

Probably naff all.

That's old information. It's still stating the March 2001 date, which was later revised and moved to March 2006. I've just renewed my car tax and it's £215 for 12 months. By that websites reckoning I would've/should've paid £405 this year and £435 next!

A £30 reduction per year. From £120 to £90.

I am sure they will get it back in another tax though.

Is it? The direct.gov site also shows the March 2001 date...confused.

As for the "showroom tax" that's not something I will ever need to worry about as it is highly unlikely that I will ever buy a car brand new!!

Toxic - having bought new thrice but recently got a (well made) two year old car, I think I'm also in the same category!

Can I just point out that this is absolutely feck all to do with saving the planet.

The extra income from charging higher emission vehicles more is NOT used for environmental projects.

The difference in cost for a 110gC02e/km vehicle compared to a 210gCO2e/km vehicle bears no relationship to the impact of the additional emissions. It also ignores entirely the number of kilometres covered by the individual vehicle.

In other words, this is pure tax manipulation disguised with greenwash. Worse still it's actually environmentally damaging.

The government approach to motoring and climate change is distraction and bullshit. They really hack me off.

Totally agree. If you put politicians, bankers, lawyers and civil servants in a room you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. Thieving scum, the lot of 'em!!!

No offence to any politicians, bankers, lawyers or civil servents who may on this forum

As opposed to 25p a day for a 320D with a re-map to 215BHP. Seems like a bargain when compared.

It does but then if you can 'afford' to or choose to spend your money on a car then there's no price (within limits) on the enjoyment factor.

Agreed, personally I will be making some small sacrifices here and there to get the car I want next...just where I choose to spend my money (after the mortgage is paid and food is on the table of course).

Note they changed the rules again after all the compliants about the 2001-2006 thing.....

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...icle/DG_172916

Hence pre-2006 still never pay the 225g/km+ rates.

The 2001 date is still relevant too as before that the flat rates for above 1500cc etc. apply.

They did try and make the post 2006 rates apply to cars all the way back to 2001 - but as a retrospective tax this was very unpopular and thankfully the recession seems to have killed off the idea (for now).

Had this discussion with a friend last night, someone butted in and said "Road tax should be scrapped and added to fuel prices"

I started to agree and then remembered I own an M3 that does 18 - 20mpg...."No bad idea" I said "£450 will do it!"

ROFL...but in principal it's the "fairest" way of administering road tax right? The more fuel your car uses and the more mileage you do the more tax you pay.

It's all an effin con anyway...

I know, it would be the "Fairest" way, but Labour would lose too much money, plus they nail enough tax on fuel as it anyway. People just "wouldn't get it" and see it as just another new tax revenue!

Sorry, yes do smoke and buy elsewhere. Helps alot living near to a large port with ferries to the continent!

Oh yes remember this now.

So potentially £950 to register a high output CO2 new car. What's the betting the dealers compensate with some discount/extras.

I used to think this even though my present and past two cars are in the highest VED bands but then I thought what about all the lorries that transport our food etc to the supermarkets. If their costs spiral for example, who is going to pay..............us surely in increased food/goods prices.

So ultimately it's all bollocks imo. Just another way of screwing us with more taxes.

Exactly! You know what, i can hand on heart say that if things in the UK were a little different (not vastly, just a little) for the better then I could see the value in all our taxes but as it stands most of our roads are in "meh" condition, schools and healthcare are rubbish and the sodding bankers are getting bailed out of a mess of their own creation.

Hey ho, life goes on.

You should let me take it out for you, no good having a good looking car and just looking at it.
