335 BMW Perf Exhaust Drone

Am I the only one that thinks it drones between 1800-2500? I have a loaner that is a 2011 335i M-Sport with performance goodies. I was excited about it but it drones some. I have an '08 335i and wanted

What is everyone's experience?

Thanks!!!

Any aftermarket exhaust drones if YOU think it drones. it's like asking if an exhaust is "loud." To ME, they all drone. it's how tolerable you are to the drone.

Sound is very subjective. Ask 3 people and they will tell you it sounds 3 different ways (and don't even bother with YouTube videos). Best thing to have done is find someone local and drive around in their car before you buy. Luckily it's not your car, hate to see you drop $1200 and not like it.

Define drone. Its louder, but I don't have any annoying resonance if thats what you're referring to. I have a 6mt if that makes a difference?

My stock exhaust drones between 1800-2000. I have the golf tee mod and am 6AT. They all drone, but like others have said, it depends how sensitive your ear is in order to notice/tolerate it. 6MT's seem to have less drone complaints though.

Maybe they were too lazy to redesign the Performance Exhaust for the N55 but on my manual N54 there is absolutely no drone no matter what RPM.

on my N54 6 MT with bmw performance exhaust there is drone. 1500ish rpm to low 2000rpm.

drone to me = low resonance noise in cabin, sort of like bass.

It does drone, I don't think there is such thing as drone-less exhuast. but I still love.

but even when stock.. you can hear the drone at very very minimum noise, with golf tee it is more pronounced.

My wife's 323i is 100% drone free.

I am not sure if you are from the US, but I know for a fact that the US-version of the Performance Exhaust does not have the electric flap like the stock exhaust, whereas the EU-version of the exhaust has the flap. I noticed drone when I disconnected the electric exhaust flap on my stock exhaust (golf tee mod), maybe that's the problem with the US version of the Performance exhaust. I have absolutely no drone, not now (fully catless with Vibrant resonators) and also not when all the cats were installed.

I have the BMW perf exhaust on my 335i LCI E91 Msport and it sounds as sweet as a nut. Bit boisterous when started from cold but once WG's close up and the LH rear muffler flap closes at idle to ~ 3k rpm its sonorous to a tee !!!

You're right my Canadian version do not have the flap. it is open all the time and does make low resonance noise in the cabin between 1500ish rpm to mid 2000rpm. Some call that drone, some don't. To me it is drone since it gives a buzzing effect & that noise is clearly not there on other 3 series models

If you have to ask to warrant what you are experiencing then most likely its not for you. IMO larger diameter piping/free flowing mufflers will induce droning, just the nature of it.

I'm pretty sure all North American perf exhausts (I'm surprised even that the Euro PE is different) have no flap. Never heard of someone here say otherwise. There is a spot on the exhaust where you plug your now unused actuator vacuum tube. I've seen a pic of it on here even.

I have the BMW PE on the 2008 E90 335i and the only thing that I might consider drone is on cold startup as previously mentioned, but that goes away in 30 seconds. Around 2100-2200 at light load it gets slightly louder than above and below that rev range, but definitely not a resonance or what I would consider drone. I had a Borla before this and that was the definition of drone from about 1500-2500 all the time.

If you think the BMW PE drones from 1800-2500 then any non-stock exhaust is really not for you as the PE is about as quiet and drone free as any exhaust for the 335 available.

I'm surprised they gave you that as a loaner. I usually get factory optioned 328's.

Is the BMW perf. exhaust the same exhaust that comes on the 335is? If so, then it does drone a bit, and drones a lot more when you do the golf tee mod.
