Getting raped by VA Car tax.... 2010 assessments are in.

My car is a 2009, last year my tax assessment was $1100 and now it's $1200 in 2010. Like it actually went UP

Anyone else in this boat?

They claim my car is worth over $40k 2 years later.... no chance in hell that's true!

i have had the same issue. I went to the Fairfax County office and disputed them.
They told me my car was worth 9k more than what I paid for a year earlier. So i took my invoice and talked to the manager asking how can my car be valued at 9k more when I bought the car about a year ago for x-9k. They adjusted it accordingly. They just use the highest number available to them to make money. With the same token, if your car gets stolen - the insurance will surely give the lowest price for your car possible. You get raped twice. It's so much fun in VA. lol.

What did they lower it to? I just bought my 2009 335i for $38k. I wonder if I should show them my buyer's order. Haha!

if i'm not mistaken, when your car gets registered, the amount you paid for the car goes on record at the DMV, and i think that is what they use to assess the value of your car, and depreciate it accordingly.

Then most people qualify for VA tax relief, which is $20K off the initial value of the car. From there you take the remaining amount and i think its $4.57 for every $100 assessed in value of the car.

The first line is incorrect. I bought a brand new 2006 Suby Legacy GT for around 24k. When I got my tax bill for 2007, they put the value of the car as ~30k. I called and said the car was purchased for 24k and they said too bad.

I wish i pursued it further.

well thanks to this thread, i'll do some math when i get my bill.

Basically whatever value they assess it at, i'll apply the VA tax rate, ratio, and offset for car tax relief since i qualify. If it is higher than what i paid for the car, i will argue it.

I need to move back to Maryland!

“For valuation of automobiles, all localities use the National Automobile Dealers’ Association’s Official Used Car Guide (NADA) as their primary valuation guide for cars and sport utility vehicles. When a vehicle is not listed in the primary guide, the locality obtains values from some other source. All cities and counties in Virginia levy this tax on motor vehicles.” In all Virginia localities, the Car Tax assessments are based on the value as of January 1st (Virginia Code, Section 58.1-3515). "

Estimate the value here http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2007/BMW.

Then if the state is still covering 70% of the first 20k of assessed value you owe:
$140 + $45 * (# thousands over 20K of assessed value).

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/car...lification.htm

And here they recognize that some values have appreciated:
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/cartax_carvalues.htm

Ah dammit, I hate this crap. I remember dealing with this last year. Luckily with my 2005 G35 coupe I had to only shell out about 400 bucks.

Haha, I actually hired an auto broker and he did the negotiating for me, but it was in pristine condition with 5000 miles from the Mercedes dealer in Fredericksburg.

I'm so afraid to get mine. I got one for the 330 (for Jan-May before I sold it) and it was $189. I'm going to cry when I see what it's going to be for the 2011.

I haven't gotten mine. I only lived in VA since Sept 09 and had to pay it in like December 09. Am I going to get it soon? Does it only come once a year?
