Cool BMW iDrive Touch Controller Demo Video

BMW iDrive Touch Controller Demo Video

COMMENTS

Most upcoming 2014 BMW models will be available with the new iDrive Touch system, which features a touch sensitive controller knob for a whole new way of input. Instead of having to scroll for letter input, users can now write letters on the surface of the iDrive knob.

This new written input method can be used anywhere where a speller wheel is needed: navigation, multimedia search, contact search, phone numbers, etc.

It also accepts gestures for such actions as zooming in and out on a map.

Check out a demo below.

Nice. Saw this on the new 4 series. Of course I'm probably not allowed to say that!

And all of this Connected Drive stuff just became irrelevant with Apple's announcement of iOS in the Car.

I'll ask what everyone wants to know - will it retrofit into late models with nav?

The 1st video above eludes to a bigger screen with the iDrive Touch. How big is this screen to the Nav Screen that is available on the current F30s? I currently have a 2013 335i xDrive M-Sport, but have ordered a 2014 model. Will the Nav Screen in that unit be bigger then my current screen in my 2013?

A THIRD hump! Do you think we'd have to have the larger screen in order to accommodate the new software? Sigh... you're probably right.

If its possible to retrofit I doubt u need a new screen. It's not needing any additional room to do the writing. CIC navs already has the scroll letter section. I assume one might need the new NBT navi unit though. It's quite possible. At least it doesn't seem like you need a new controller trim nor is a new screen needed, just unit and controller.

Poor. Could have done so much more with it by supporting more gestures.

Character input and Zoom and that's it ?

When will the touch controller be available in the 2014 X3? Is it there yet? Or will I have to wait even longer. I'm getting ready to order mine. If it's a month wait, then I'm patient enough, but if its 6 more months, then i'll forgo it.

The 2014's at our dealership have the new iDrive, but not the touch controller. I doubt they'd change that in mid model year. Looks like most the next MY14's that go into production in July will get it.

Not sure about this, but i guess one will really be able to tell if one likes it when one gets a chance to test this out by oneself.

Looks like my friend's 335i may have the new touch iDrive. He's supposed to pick up his 2014 this weekend.
