Aftermarket intercooler Vs. Warranty
Before i get slammed with the SEARCH replies.. I already did, and i didn't find much info. Has anyone ever been voided of their Warranty/Extended Warranty because of an aftermarket intercooler? It does technically help the engine..
Ideas? |

Any dealer can refuse any warranty claim for just about any reason, it’s well within their rights. You can fight it if you’d like, but usually the dealer wins. There is not clear line as to what constitutes an issue, policy will vary by SA, dealer, and tech. Some dealers will try to refuse work if you have a drop in filter, others will happily perform warranty work on FBO and above. With that being said, I’ve never had an issue with my intercooler. But the answers people will give here really aren’t going to be of much help, you need to see how your specific dealership will deal with it. You are certainly right that an intercooler purely “helps” the motor, but many dealers could care less about that.

Technically, any aftermarket mod can void a warranty as long as there is evidence that the aftermarket part is linked to the cause of the problem, even slightly remote.

You will be fine. To help for a more dealer friendly aftermaket intercooler make sure to get an intercooler that is a direct replacement of the stock ie that uses the same connecting c-clip couplers as the OEM.

i am glad me and my SA are cool and have a MOD friendly dealer. they flat out told me NO DPs. That's easy. They told me "why do we want to turn away work!"
I am in for WGs rattle replacement now. going on two days. I put everything back to stock except my ETS FMIC. By now I would have gotten a call to say, sorry bud. But no call. So as everyone says, it depends.

but for my WG rattle inspection (last friday), I had my ER CP, and BOV in, but Stock Intake. When i took her in for surgery (yesterday), I put back my Stock CP and DV. better safe than sorry, despite what they said, i didn't want to give them an excuse. Especially if BMWNA had to approve the WG replacement.

That makes me mad. I have heard a lot of folks getting replaced turbos because of WG rattle. That's what I wanted but they are doing all this work just to adjust replace WGs. The rod as well. Good for you. Though.

I remove the tune, meth, lines, intake etc. but have zero interest in pulling the intercooler, hoses, clamps, etc every time it goes in. I leave it.
My dealer has never said anything including a HPFP replacement and recall work - though I've never gone in for a turbo replacement or major engine repair. |

You are going to hear a ton of different answers with a question like this. But it all depends on your dealership and your relationship with your S.A. I personally got very lucky because my S.A. has a FBO E90 335i running 100% methanol so he knows whats up He will let me know if I need to take something off and put the stock part back on. For example of buddy of mine had bad wastegate issues and he needed his stock turbo's replaced. I sent him to my S.A. and all he had to take off was the tune and the downpipes. He told him to kind of hide the meth lines just in case or to be on the safe side. So he had his CP-e intercooler, and stett oil cooler along with his intake and methanol were still on the car and turbos got replaced with no problems I guess its about who you know...
