Funnily enough I've just had an email newsletter through from our brokers

Quote:
We have every sympathy for residents and business owners who have suffered damage to their properties in the recent troubles.

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) is advising those people unfortunate enough to be affected by the recent riots around the UK to speak to their insurance broker as soon as possible so they can assist with their loss.

Most home insurance should cover people for fire, looting or damage and many policies will also cover people for alternative accommodation costs if they cannot stay in their home. Commercial insurance policies will normally cover businesses for damage to their premises, including the financial loss due to interruption to their business as a result.

If you suffer any damage as a result of riot, civil commotion or malicious persons you must ensure that you:

1) Notify the Police immediately and

2) Provide written details of the claim to your Insurers within 7 days of the event.

The majority of insurance providers operate a 24 hour claims line and can help people arrange for emergency repairs and the damage to be inspected as quickly as possible.

Nottingham council are planning to evict any council tenant convicted of crimes connected to the riots.

Sounds a great idea, but who gets landed with them and the further problems?

Just heard croydon is back on riot warning tonight... though weather round here is really looking grim.

Rain will kill the riot ... time to hope for rain.

I'm not supporting or backing any specific political party with this post. That's up to the individual ...

But, in case anyone missed it. Here is Harriet Harman (wearing a chameleon coat of many changing colours and reciting verbatim from the big book of spin and blame) purporting not to be wanting to politically point score .. but doing the exact opposite .. getting a rightful drubbing on Newsnight.

Give it a minute or too .... as Michael Gove gently simmers to boiling point.

Great find Dave.
The look on Michael Gove's face at about 2.14 is incredible.
If looks could kill....

Gove tore into Harman though, who clearly has been having lessons from Mandleson in how to say one thing one minute and then contradicting yourself minutes later!

He sits there and lets her shoot her mouth off without interuption, when it is MG's turn to speak she doesn't let him and continually interupts. Hideous, despicable 'woman in comfortable shoes'. She is the personification of every reason why I am not a Labour voter, starting with rank hypocrisy (titled close relations, private school education, two houses, millionaire, kids go to selective schools - you get my drift). A champagne socialist if ever there was one.

It seems the Met Police are upset that Cameron stated in the Commons yesterday that the Police had made' initial errors'.
This is of course absolutly denied by the Met Police on TV today.
But how is it that in my local town, amongst others nearby, Primark, Argos & JD Sports were looted. Yet they are only 500m from a Large Main Police Station. In Argos everything electrical was taken and they had the time to do it.
It would suggest that the Met Police are disorganised, mis-trained and from some of the pics on TV, with insufficient co-ordinated discipline.
IMO,whatever the Met Police would like to think, they have not exactly done themeselves proud.
The Police are supposed to protect the public. There was not much sign of it around here or in London, Croydon or elsewhere.
There is no doubt that as proposed in the 1920's, senior police officers should be recruited from degree level recruits on an Officer track, separate from Sgts & Constables etc. The whole police system needs a change, complete with a National Police Service, rather than County Constabularys.
Someday the bullet will have to be bit!

If the Police were ineffective, you have the mealy-mouthed liberal politicians and human rights laws to thank.

The problem with the police is they are too politically correct. The police should use controlled aggression when it is needed but you look at half of the modern force and think of wimps. 6`2" 18 stone burly bobbies who can fight without fear would have sorted out the problems much quicker than wet behind the ears 8 stone weaklins.
Leadership within the police seems to be made up of graduate entrants so what the former post suggested seems to be in play now but not working.
I would say we need more Gene Hunts.

The Police need intelligence with fitness with the right equipment. Not 6'-2" 18 stone thick burlies.
The British Army did a superb job with their 'snatch' squads in controlling mobs in Northern Ireland and thats with using infantry regiments with the average size squaddie.
If the Police can't do it, I am sure the British Army could!

I don't believe this is a police force issue. It's a total failure of our well paid (european) justice system. We can kill people with good reason in Iraq, Afghanistan etc, but we now! use the water cannon on people that change a city into a war zone with just one purpose - steal goods

I agree with with what you're trying to get at, but not the "good reason" in your 3rd sentence.

As to what I think of the looters (not protestors!!!), I'll re-iterate what I read elsewhere which is that it's all down to bad or lack of parenting. If the parents dont instill in their kids a sense of respect for them, then what respect will they have for the police and rest of society.

They certainly could not do worse than the Police in my area!
If you check back on how the situation developed in N I, the Police lost control. It was the British Army that held & won the the ground. The Police stood no chance.
For starters, looters could be shot on sight, as the law was in New Orleans a few years ago. I would like that!
In the papers today, Cameron is bringing over the New York Police guy for consultation. Lets hope that the Government & Met Police at least face the fact that maybe they could learn something, from someone else's experience.
There is no doubt that a lot of the blame must fall on the shoulders of the previous government, who over the years developed what they really thought was a 'progressive' attitude to all things. What a load of rubbish! They were seriously wrong on everying. I cannot think of thing they did which was right! I nowadays never take the opposition seriously whatever the have to say. I look at the opposition front bench and I think: 'What a shower'
