Notes on a 2011 335is trunk sub install with the Harman Kardon system

Customer brings old trunk sub box/amp from old car, do not want any trunk panels to be removed but wants this sub to bring pain to his ears -his words, not mine.

One hour later his sub is installed with the help of the HK/Logic7 PnP harness, and the pain was very welcomed...

Harman Kardon OEM amp:

OEM amp 20-pin connector (from car side) unplugged (slide to the right and unplug) and PnP harness ready to go in:

Plug PnP harness to OEM amp harness (from car side) and slide lock to the left:

Plug PnP harness to OEM amp connector, slide lock the left, tuck excess wires but leave 6-pin PnP harness subconnector exposed:

Plug custom Navone LOC with remote out to 6-pin connector, then wire remote out and RCA extension cables to aftermarket amp:

Tuck LOC into OEM compartment:

Connect ground and 12V to amp and then to the battery -here the 12V cable is plugged into a double slot of the battery distribution block (blue wire) using the OEM connector and pin:

And this is the sub and amp (JL Audio 10" W3 and old school 250/1 v2) box finished -not a beauty but this is what the customer wanted:

Notes:
- Navone LOC works exactly like OEM in turning the amp on by just opening a door or trunk, no need to crank volume up for the signal sensing circuit to trigger.

- the combination of the Harman Kardon system and a trunk sub is what anybody that wants a better performance out of the OEM system should get, IMO. No need of expensive overhauls unless you are an audio junkie.

A trunk sub will take over the heavy bass so the OEM EQ can be agressively adjusted for midbass and above. Before a trunk sub doing this aggressive EQ tuning will make the mid and the highs showcase the limitation in bass from the OEM woofers, creating the frequent complaint of lack of bass. In fact the OEM woofers are fine up to a certain point - the sub just takes over from that certain point forward.

IMO, the Harman Kardon system sounds better than the Individual Audio. And with trunk sub it simply surpasses it.

- For a much better looking but with the same or better sub bass performance install get a VP Electricity custom sub enclosure (E90 and E92) for a 100% OEM integration looks and trunk space.

Love the bungee cords
Believe it or not, I'm using the same thing on my JL powerwedge subwoofer
Except my bungee cords are colour matched to the car
Melbourne red car with red cords

This was some hillbilly install, but it sounds pretty great. And again, this being a lease this is 100% reversible back to stock.

Well done!

It's so much easier to upgrade the stock audio with these PnP harnesses!

I just wanted to remind you that you should use the "M"-spec bungee cord when installing into the "is" model. The standard bungee cord is fine for the lateral and linear acceleration capabilities of a 335i, but when you have the newest "is" edition, with its tuned suspension and other performance tweaks, you really need the M Performance bungee cord to handle the heightened stresses.

At twice the cost of the standard bungee cord

That's the lightest bungee cord available in my trash bin. Weight is important for performance...

well other than your trunk mount subwoofer
there is no "right" way to attach a subwofer in the trunk
unless you want to drill holes in the trim

bungee cords might not look slick
but i've done extensive testing
they do work, and the box does not move
i used 2 cords, but i run each one over one of the top corners
so when done it looks like an X
and the box hasn't moved since i installed it

and the best thing is when it's time to sell my car, i can undo them easily
with no damage to the car or visible wear marks etc
plus they cost less than $15

I used industrial strength velcro on previous installs. You can find it at home depot. Looks a lot cleaner and will never move. Also lets you put it back to stock pretty easily.

I did the traditional square box in the middle of the trunk set up. When figuring in the box dimensions for the internal volume I wanted, I made the box height 15 3/4". Then I carpeted a strip of 1/2" MDF and used that to create a nice snug wedge between the top of the sub box and rear deck shelf. Box does not move, no holes drilled.

How much for this harness? I am thinking about just adding a 10" or 12" sub and leaving everything else....I have logic 7 sounds really good the 8" woofers are nice but not like a real sub!!! Also can you provide what your Logic7 eq settings are with the sub?

Thanks

Exactly how is the 12v power cable connected? Are 07' e92 335i equipped with the same battery? I'm installing a amp soon, and need to find a place to connect the power cable?

Isn't that JL amp supose to mounted the other way?

Those black ribs are heatsinks and heat will just rise onto the amp, not away from it.

Technic,

I noticed that you are in Lauderdale, not far from me. Do you do installs?
Shop? Website?

Thanks!
