unfortunately, it might be time to investigate either the Cam Ledge issue or the vanos system being replaced.

Cool, if you have a BT tool you can reset the CEL. You can use the TORQUE app free on the android market and get a bluetooth adapter with it for like $15 dlls on eBay. That's how I reset my CEL ferw yrs ago.

there are two camshaft sensors that are not hard to replace at the front of the head. he might be referencing those.

Yep that's what he was talking about "Eccentric Shaft Sensor" i searched for it throught the threads , do you think it can cause the 2a82 error?

I'm not sure, but i saw them referenced in a couple of the posts I found when researching the vanos solenoid issues.

Do you guys think the VANOS solenoids would be safe to clean in an ultrasonic cleaner? Since they're metal they shouldn't get jacked up or anything right?

just use carb cleaner and compressed air, it works.

Way overkill. Just use electro cleaner, brake kleen, or similar and some compressed air (that's optional really). The solenoids really don't get THAT dirty.

I also have these errors. Cleaning and Swap VANOS solenoid did not help. I bought camshaft sensors, intake and exhaust, I mentioned yesterday. See if the errors come back. I'll know.

Totally agree, heard the same warning recently from an experienced BMW mechanic I just discovered. I have been changing oil per BMW CBS for 140K, and he says you need to change twice as often. Now I have the CEL on, with a 2A98 code.

These are very helpful posts, thanks to all contributors !!

Threw a code this morning and decided to clean both Vanos Solenoid. Last time I didn't really cleaned it but just swap the intake and exhaust Vanos Solenoid.

Cleaned it with CRC Electronic Cleaner and some compressed air.

Cleared the codes and reset adaptations.

It's running fine so far. I'm thinking I need to replace the Eccentric Shaft Sensor but really wanted to narrow it down and try this first since it's a cheap fix. I don't really want to spend $300 on the Eccentric Shaft Sensor until I'm certain that's the problem.

I agree.

I totally agree...BMW long maintenance schedules cause much of the basic issues on these machines. I am going to half the schedule from now on.

I changed my solenoids, coils and spark plugs. Cleaned MAF and I'm still getting a P0012.

Car shuts off occasionally at idle and also after driving rpms jump to 1000rpms.

Any help on this?

Hello everyone,
I have the same problem with vanos and came to this crossroad.

Does anybody know how to identify where the problem is without opening the engine cover. Is there any sound or else which can indicate the right path.

I would guess that if it is cam ledge problem that the engine light would come and go how the wear is progress?!

In my case, the car runs just fine while cold, while after 5-10 minutes it becomes lazy.

Or should I replace a cheaper item (vanos unit) and if I am wrong than to replace new head (or to sell car as is).

Thanks

So CRC Electronics Cleaner is safe to spray on these?? I'd imagine with the o-rings off, but just want to make sure.. I see most people just use air, but as I've never had to do this I'm just curious ahead of time so when the time comes I'm prepared.. Where do you aim the air when directed at solenoids, in those little holes? I have a compressor with a small air tool that would probably fit in those holes.. Thanks!

yes, that stuff will probably work fine as it can't be harsher than carb cleaner. You direct the air all in the little holes, yes.

Thumbs up Cleaned my solenoids today, thanks for great DIY and thread!

Been getting 2A87 codes and have been wanting to do this for awhile to see if cleaning will resolve the codes. I've had occasional SES lights that come and go but no problems with drivability or any limp mode incidents. (2006 330i 111178 miles)
Anyway, today was the day. I purchased replacement o-ring sets and bolts before hand just in case I needed them. Everything went like clockwork. O-rings did not come out but no problem getting them out. I used a cut away 1/2 gal milk jug, put the solenoid in the neck and sprayed with MAF cleaner til it ran clean. Blew out and dried with compressed air. I reused the O-rings (with a bit of fresh oil) and bolts. Reassembled, swapping the 2 solenoids as suggested by others, hardest part was getting the bolts started since there's not much room to get your fingers in there.
Cleared the faults using CarlyforBMW android software with my bluetooth OBDII adapter.
I'll report back in a month or so.
Thanks!
Toby

So I have the same problems with my 08 N54 335i.

Vanos Solenoids replaced with brand new ones. Cam position sensors also replaced with new ones. Oil/filter change done with recommended Bmw oil for the N54.

However the below error still persistent and very annoying.

2A82 Inlet Vanos variable cam control test
3100 Boost pressure control, deactivation
2A89 Crank Shaft - Inlet camshaft correlation

These errors completely persistent. Anyone have the same and dealt with them how? I see some people mentioning the cam bearing ledge / gears. Trying to avoid opening the Top cover if possible, but will be done as a last resort.

Any assistance highly appreciated.
