Help with small problem solving puzzle

My science teacher game me this small puzzle to figure out and it counts as a quiz...This is the lamest core class ever BTW and i feel dumb doing these problem solving puzzles. Anyway here it is:

Four people (M, N, O, P) each own a cat and a dog. Each cat and dog is named after one of the people, but no pet is named after its owner. P's dog and O's cat are both named after the owner of the cat named O. The namesake of N's cat is the owner of the cat whose namesake owns the dog named M.

I need to solve that...so far i got:

M's cat = O
dog = ?

N's cat = P
Dog = O...just figured this one out i think

O's cat = M
dog = ?

P's cat = N
dog = M

You never did these in school? My gifted teacher gave these to us all the time, you need to make a grid and play with X's.

meh, i got them in my geometry classes. but i made a deal with my teacher under the table lol... basically, i hooked him up with some car parts, in return, the answers to the work lol. i would walk in school early, go to his desk, and just pick it up, and head to my class ahahah

hmm i've been getting different answers all across the board.

Nikki, yes thats the exact wording, worded poorly IMO and so there have to be assumptions as to what goes where. I'm assuming an owner wouldn't name both pets the same name. I agree with whoever said i'll never be using this in life. I struggle with these core classes because they are a waste of time and bore the hell out of me.

Actually, as absurd as something like this is, it teaches you resourcefulness. You are doing exactly what youre supposed to, whether or not you get the answer correct. Youre getting the fundementals of how to use outside help in obtaining information.

These type of problems require you to do some thinking.

Try this problem:

A dark night. Aaron, Bill, Cliff, and Doug are on one side of a bridge, with only one flashlight. The bridge can at most hold only two people at a time. Each of the kids have their own walking speeds but they need to share a flashlight, so a pair must go as slow as the slowest one. Individually:

Aaron takes 1 minutes to cross the bridge
Bill takes 2 minutes to cross the bridge
Cliff takes 5 minutes to cross the bridge
Doug takes 10 minutes to cross the bridge

What is the lowest amount of time for all four to cross the bridge ??

And post your solution....

Having someone post the answer for you is the easy way out. How do you learn anything from that ??

Deligation and resourcefulness. Why do you think CEO's are where they are at? They have VP's who are very good at doing the work for them.

i believe thats the right one. I originally did it on my own but got:

MC=O
MD=N

NC=P
ND=O

OC=M
OD=P

PC=N
PD=M

so while i was close i was slightly off...i'm really not very good at solving these things and thats why i asked for help. Not like i didn't try and just wanted the answer...i just wanted to make sure i got the right answer so i dont fail something like this.

Its all good man, no worries. Its funny how people can say that nobody should get a free answer and yet Im sure theyve done it themselves in the past. Those who live in glass houses...

Aaron crosses with Bill, Aaron goes back across (2 minutes + 1 minute).
Cliff crosses with Doug, Bill goes back across (10 minutes + 2 minutes).
Aaron crosses with Bill (2 minutes)
2+1+10+2+2 = 17 minutes
