The Powertrain warranty for 7Y/100L miles is less than $2K. You cannot get it after your original warranty expire and it start after your original warranty.

At over 63,000 mi and no injector issues. O2 sensor and urea tank were grumpy around 50k, and a reductant injector was sticking closed for 2 nights in the cold, but fixed itself.

Oh, and a friend of mine that worked at a non-BMW dealership said that some places will let you pay a few hundred $ to CPO certify a car even if you don't sell it, and that the process lets you get the CPO warranty as if you had sold the car to yourself as CPO.

So what do you think the potential costs are? And the likelihood of you needing it? Even if we assume $4000 in repairs and a 20% odds of needing it (both way high imo), that works stuck bring the fair cost to $800....

The cost is just below $2K (got mine from Daniel Dutton at Pacific BMW). I cannot predict the odds of needing it.

I do not believe in extended warranty for most cars as the odds are in favor of the warranty company. I am now at 51K miles on my 335d. I have been to the dealer too many time and they replaced many expensive parts. My prior experience tell me that the odds are now in my favor.

Let me rephrase - $800 is what one should be willing to pay if the odds of upcoming repairs are 20% and the expected costs are $4k. That and less - make it worthwhile, that and more - too expensive. Of course, it all depends on one's assumption of what those odds and costs would be. In your case, if we presume the expected repairs are still $4k, the implied odds you assign to having it need repairs are just under 50%.

I will not list the smaller items (like swirl flaps, etc), here are the major parts that has been replaced under warranty: 8 injectors (8*500=$4000 parts), SCR tank and mixer ($2000 parts). I do not know the labor cost, my car usually stay at the dealer more than one day each time. Let say it is $2000 labor. Total is at least $8000.

It's not what WAS, but was is likely to be. One might argue that the more work one had done, the less there will be in the future. I actually called BMW NA trying to get statistics, but that led nowhere..

I have essentially the same car (2011 w/48k) and had 2 injectors replaced. So far

I was told by a SA that the parts that they replace are subject to a 2 year warranty. And if the issue is the same than the labor is too. Did not press them on getting it in writing yet - the car will be in the shop until sometime in February, so I have the time, but wonder if that could be substantiated by someone else?

If anyone's curious - getting 5 new injectors (1 was already replaced not too long ago) and a new intake manifold (on back order in Germany with an expected production date of late Jan). And they're cleaning a couple of other parts.

It sounds like this is more involved than they first thought. New intake (I think this is the part on back-order), new head (or is it being cleaned?), new head gasket among other things.

I was told as well by my SA that there is a two-year warranty on this work performed.

I think two of my heads (no pun intended) is what they are sending out for cleaning as well.

More importantly, if this work does, in fact, carry a 2y warranty, then it all but eliminates the need for an extended power train warranty as this is most of what usually goes wrong w/our cars anyway, right?

Roman - I was told two years by my SA on the phone. I'll have to follow up to receive more specifics on exactly what is and is not covered. I'd suggest that you do the same in case I misheard or was misinformed.

I'm off warranty in the middle of February - I probably will want some kind of warranty on the car. A shame that there are so many problems with a car < 4 years and 50,000 miles.

hey, well, they told me the expected production date for the manifold is Jan 2x, don't recall exactly, so I don't even see a point of calling now. At least I am putting up miles on a loaner now.. though 328xi coupe is no match to our car..

swimmbackwards, just spoke w/the dealer, the parts are actually in, so hopefully should have my car back next wk. Also their manager should call me back on how this will play out if the same issue recurs.. in light of the warranty they provide, etc.. i'll keep you posted.

My dealer says the intake is still not available and waiting for it from Germany. So no car this week.

I'm sure with the correct solvents, time, and effort, it could be cleaned up close to perfect.

However, remember the intake also incorporates the swirl flaps and their DC motor actuator which is controlled by the DDE and also incorporated into the OBD fault monitoring system.

That said, I'd bet BMW wants to insure the owner does not have any issues with the swirl flap system in the event a tech cleans the intake wrong or in the event the DC motor is already fried due to soot buildup binding the flaps.

Outside of warranty in my garage, sure I'll clean the thing up. But within warranty it is comforting to know you are getting new parts.
