They are hand painted!!
Just watching on National Geographic about how Porsche 911's are made.
The top coat is still hand sprayed and it takes three years of training before the person is let loose on the real thing and the whole paint process takes 8 hours including the primer and lacquer that the robots spray on. The making of the engines is pretty impressive! Would love to go around the factory like Andrew did at AMG...........actually you can if you buy a new Porsche and do the factory collect option. If only. |

Yes, they do pre-arranged factory tours.

Nooooooo don't like mr toxic I them, driving a Porsche Turbo is better than sex matey and has far more longevity and stamina. I still get sent the Porsche magazine and there was an article about the iconic shape which explained why it hasn't changed apart from light designs and some minor other details. Basically it's quite technical lol. Sometimes wish they didn't hold their price so well, would make it easier to buy one secondhand!! |

Yes, it was on last night - amazing programme.
Rolls Royce was last week, which was amazing also. Audi next week. Fantastic channel for geekery - it also satisfies my morbid fascination with air crashes!

You coming to UK9? Quote:
Wonder why they're specifically showing the R8 factory, will it be that much different to the mainstream Audi production line? |

Also, it wouldn't surprise me if the R8 had a higher element of handbuild/finish or some additional space-age processes than the A3/A4/A5/A6 just wont see, much like, I imagine, the RS models do. Plus the R8 is the halo product - if you're going to be on telly make sure you're putting your best out there! I picked up last night that the Caymans and Boxsters were manufactured at that same factory and they hardly got a mention at all. Can't wait for next week!

I also think you're correct about the R8's, certainly the V10 has many handbuilt aspects to it from what I was told, so no reason why the 'baby' V8 wouldn't either. That R8 V10 I drove was seriously well put together, attention to detail was impressive. So is the price tag but then my argument is buy secondhand and save a few pennies. They're still holding their price well though. As for the 911 mega factory, still can't get over that leather work for the dash. An hour just to do that small piece and I've always wondered how they did it. When you look at things closely and weigh it all up, this is where a large part of the price tag comes from imo and probably true of many other supercars/ true sports cars of European manufacture. Yep, looking forward to next weeks programme. |

Mega factories is brilliant! I found the episodes last night i've got Ferrari, Porsche, Audi, Lambo, BMW, Corvette and Rolls Royce i watched the audi and lambo episodes and they were brilliant.
The R8 does have alot more of its processes completed by hand (majority of the welding) its fascinating also the model shown is the V10 The lambo episode was even better, it was showing the murcielago SV being 'hand built' and the employees stitching the seats together, dash etc... was brilliant to watch |
