Vanguard Vs. BMW Performance Exhaust

Been searching through threads and threads and it seems like there's no more left and I still don't seem to have an answer.

I know exhaust is all about preference, but I'd like to know your preferences.

I prefer an exotic sexy tone, I don't care about how loud it is, I just care about how nice it sounds. I love the way exotic cars sounds (who doesn't) and I know an inline 6 will never sound like one, but I think the 335i can sound pretty nice.

It comes down to:

BMW PERFORMANCE EXHAUST - (worried about it not sounding too nice down low)
VANGUARD CATBACK EXHAUST - (worried about it not sounding exotic more muscley)

Please do not recommend AE, heard it in person and not a fan of it at all.

Which exhaust in your opinion has the nicest sexiest tone?

EDIT: I will be putting quad tips on either exhaust

If you go with bmw pe, try not to change tips. It will change the sound as well.

If you don't care about volume then perhaps the PE is for you

Exactly...I changed mine and had them rewelded a few days later. My joy went from being a 10, to a 4. BMW PE and catless dp equals compliments by all sorts of drivers and pedestrians on the street. On the low end you have gurgles and pops. High end it sounds like a sport bike.

The Vanguard sounds kind of obnoxious to me. BMW PE is much more understated.

How about the ETS exhaust? Based on the videos, it has a nice exotic tone to it as well. Plus it's a catback.

The post above mine said that the ETS system was a catback. I just wanted to clear up any confusion.

Garage List
e92 BMW 335i  [8.84]
I have the same dilemna!! I have the PE installed on my car and the Vanguard laying in my basement.

I love the PE, but the hype about the vanguard makes me want to put it on rather then list it for sale.

To me, the PE's tips looks like ass, unrefined and unfinished.....looks like two pipes that came from a mineke muffler shop. If you're considering any BMW exhaust, Dinan is the way to go. It looks better and sounds good. Or you can weld different tips on the PE, but some say that can change the sound....

I went with the Vanguard because I'm all about performance, and wanted my car to be a true stage 3 with FBO.

So if you don't care about the gains of 10 hp, then I'd go with Dinan....go with Vanguard if you want the extra horses....it gurgles and pops at lower rpms and downshifts, screams like a sport bike when you let her rip....just my .02.

There is no Vanguard for a 335xi, correct?

Damn, I have a quad diffuser, so I would need to put on quads.

So you think the PE sounds nicer then the Vanguard in terms of it's tone? I could just pair up some downpipes to make it louder if necessary as long as it sounds better.

Not a fan of ETS

Will be changing the tips anyway so it doesn't really matter. I don't want to spend the Dinan $$ don't think its worth it. Do you think your Vanguard sounds nicer then the Dinan? I don't really care for the performance since my car's running high 11's and so far I barely noticed a difference with downpipes (maybe 0.1 secs) so I don't know if an exhaust will amount to any tangible gains.

You can modify to fit on XI. Or you can consider AE Exhaust for Xi cars.

Well, I think they both sounds nice in their own way, but Vanguard is definitely louder than Dinan.....

If you really don't care for the performance, then I'd go with PE, since you said you'll be changing the tips anyway. How much is the PE exhaust anyway? If they're anywhere close to the price of Vanguard, then I'd say go with the Vanguard, because you get the added benefit of having a few extra ponies.

I know you said you don't care about the performance of an exhaust, but if you can have that with the same price that you're paying for the PE, then why not?

Well, I vbox test my car after each mod... and after running meth at high boost... even downpipes barely made a notcieable difference in my 1/4 mile times, was running the same times just 1mph faster, only reason I kept them on was for the sake of my turbos. So taking that into consideration I doubt my exhaust will make even a TINY bit of difference so it's all about making the nicest sound for me.

The PE and Vanguard will cost me the EXACT same amount, so price shouldn't be taken into consideration... the exhaust will be based 100% on the sound it makes. The extra ponies wont make a difference to me and if I needed them I could just cut secondary cats out and get things all even.

Too bad youtube doesn't represent how an exhaust sounds in person at all.

I have a vanguard, didn't like it at first but now I love it and get many compliments!

The PE isn't a catback right? Not really comparing apples to apples.
