Winter tire or all seasons?

Hi guys,

My question is... do i get winter tires or all seasons? and why? I want to know if anyone has survived the winter with this car on all seasons. If i get winters I need to look for summers again in the spring.

I had a brand new Saturn Astra (Opal Astra) and got stuck with all seasons one year. I'v never been a believer of snow tires until I tried them, and now my entire family has them.

Snows should be mandatory in Ontario just like Quebec. I personally think it would save a lot of accidents on the roads.

EDIT: All my cars are front wheel or rear wheel, all with snow tires

Then get 4 winter tires. Even some low priced Semperit winter tires are better than most all-season ones.

I would never drive through the winter without dedicated snow tires. The difference is huge.

^Exactly. Its not so much about traction when accelerating , its about grip in the cold when braking. A/S arent even close to dedicated winters. Not realy any more expensive as you are just buying your next set of tires now as both sets will last twice as long. I think they should be law too. Lots of people say you will be "FINE" on A/S. Fine...really?

Ha ha I hear ya! I know so many people that say that "ohh I will be fine!"...what makes me mad is when you see civics and other vehicles passing at 130 down the 401 and then you see them crashed shortly after. I almost feel like pulling over, making sure they are ok, then punching them in the face....Can we make this law?

I have an xi and ran Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus's last winter and did not have any problems. I upgraded to their new Sport A/S 3's this summer and plan on riding those through the winter.

The winters in Detroit should not be that dissimilar from Toronto, except that they probably actually clear the snow over there...

^great video. EVERYONE should watch this. I think winter tires should be mandatory like Quebec. Just watched another vid where 2 cars hit their brakes at 50 km/hr.......the a/s equipped car stopped 4.5 car lengths past the winter tire equipped car.

Yet again !
WATCH IT before you are going to say something like I'LL BE FINE
SURE YOU WILL... IN A DITCH !
I'm driving X5 and I would never dare to drive without winters.
Yes, you could say I'm a wooooos, I could drive without winters and be fine doing so. I have learned that it is not fun, nor safe to drive without proper gear, people that disagree on this issue, will be the ones in front of me driving super slow, or asking me for help in pushing them out of a snow bank.
All I have to say sorry, but where were in month ago ( not buying winters like you should have ).

buy winters, front or rear wheel... AWD is a different story although I would put winters too

check this video that was done by tire rack with 3 BMW's wearing: winters, summers and all seasons pretty incredible and huge difference it makes to have winters.

Used to use really bad all seasons on my e46. It was the stupidest thing I ever did now that I look back. I was lucky I never got into an accident (I was floating all over the place). I did drive slow but honestly, it wasn't worth risking my life as well as the lives of others. Chalk it up to a university kid not wanting to shell out the money for a decent set of winters.

Getting winters this weekend for my e92.

FYI - Both cars are rwd,

Even in Vancouver I've opted for true winter tires and it makes a world of difference (esp. if I want to take off for a day of skiing I don't have to worry about highway conditions).

A great article today by Peter Cheney on the subject: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe...ticle15295871/

I never used to buy winters and stuck with A/S. Then I decided to try them out. Even here in Vancouver, it makes a world of difference. Get a dedicated Winter set.

You absolutely need Winter tires over all season. Also make sure you get single compound Winter Tires over the cheaper dual compound rubber.

e92amg after all these posts I think it's clear that winter set is the only sensible option here. though I want to add to my previous post that I just got my new set this year, I elected to go with Hankook icpet evo, according to many reviews including CR it has one of the best combination of winter & rain traction, breaking and handling. price as well was reasonable.

given you are in the GTA I would suggest checking simplytire, they provided me with a fantastic service and a very competitive price.

Good luck
