1. What is the difference between 5W-30 and 5W-40? Is 5W30 thinner, better in cold temp start?
2. What is the difference between 5W-30 and 0W-30?
3. What is the difference between 5W-40 and 0W-40?
Just want to know the differences are. Thanks

1. 5w30 is thinner than 5w40 at 100c and 40c.
2. 0w30 has lower viscosity at 40c than 5w30
3. 0w40 has lower viscosity than 5w40 at 40c.

So i live in Canada, which winter can gets lower than -40C. Is it 5W30 better than 5W40, if so, would 0W40 be better than 5W30?

Now its a little complicated since not all oils are bmw ll01. Is it for your 328?

most 0w40 are not that thin in cold about 75cp at 40c. 5w40 are even worse at 40c so keep away for cold temps. I have seen many 5w30 that are thin in cold and also 0w30 wich is my favorite.

So fing a 5w30 or 0w30 ll01 oil that is 60-70cp at 40c, that is the best bet. I cant imagine how thick it gets at -40c. You use engine heater or something?

Oil manuf. specify viscosity at 40c and 100c, they should be required at 0c as well, the cat will be out the bag then. Imagine pistons pumping thru molasses. Note, some manuf specify ccs cp at low temps. Lower is better.

I'd get an engine heater. But, 0w30 is your best bet either way.

Yea it is for my 328i, and now I'm still deciding whether i should get 5W30 or 0W30. Bmw doesn't make engine heater/block heater for E90 anymore. Last Christmas, i left my car outside for over 2 weeks because i was away and the garage was full. It hadn't been driven while i was gone, the temp was somewhere around -40, i didn't start the first time when i pressed the button, but the second time it started right away. Will I lose any performance using 0W?

It doesn't really matter, there are universal products available. Alternatively, he could get a race-spec oil warmer for the engine while it's in the garage... not the most practical but it would be awesome and get the job done

The spec is -40 Deg. C and 100 Deg. C.

OP, "W" rating is a measure the pressure required to have the oil flow at -40 Deg. C. It is a complex engineering topic, but all you need to know is a 0W weight oil flows better in colder temperatures than a 5W weight oil and so on.

Why not? imho one should. I mean Walmart sells two kinds, Mobil 1 0W40 Euro and Castrol Edge 0W40 Euro, and they are not expensive, $23 and $26 in the USA per 5 qts....

Cool article. One of the requirements of a ll01 oil is a3 b4 specs. These look at hths viscosity short for high temp high shear. The requirement is greater than 3.5cp. This is very important esp for 335 turbos. Under high temp and shear oils w/o that spec oil will fail. Rp does not publish hths viscosity on their hps oils. Their standard 5w30 is only 3.1 and doesnt meet the spec. May be not important for your 328 tho, enjoy.
