Steptronic not working

So my steptronic stopped working I can no longer use DS or manual mode but at least the car still works in D. I did some searches on here and found 2 posts which called out a part#. 25167563656 (Gear Shift Assy) Since my car is an Xi, the bmw part# 25167563658. What's the difference between the two? Is the 656 inter-changeable with the 658? Any insight to this woul dbe great. Thanks guys!

For most of the people on here it was just a wire that came loose.. I think there is a DYI some where on this forum on how to take shifter apart and reconnect the wire.

I'll have to read up on this and get it to it this weekend.

I followed this video last year to fix my steptronic. The job is not hard at all. In my situation I spliced both ends together and used electrical tape but also gave the wires more slack for when I move the shifter into sport mode. Granted its a cheapo fix and don't want to spend the money to replace the whole thing (super expensive for the part).

I had to do the same last year for my steptronic and I would offer that when doing this that one takes extra care when removing the 'wood panel' that you do not chip the edges or scratch it when pulling it up and putting it back. It is easy to damage it the corners in the front when prying it up and down.

For 'wire' I would also offer using an old USB cable or another multi-pair wire that was designed to be flexible to use when splicing the wires. An example of not so flexible is ethernet cable. When splicing, I found several broken ones in mine so I basically replaced the entire segment where movement made the wire brittle (I felt this gave me extra length to work with for all wires and made it easier as well). I then used a small heat shrink wrap (electrical tape would have been fine but I don't like using it as it either drys out or becomes very sticky), and a butane soldiering iron as it is so handy/portable (be careful of the exhaust valve) you can melt things you do not wish to melt if using one.

When completed it worked very well. While doing this work you could also easily perform a "sunglasses tray" swap if you do not want or need the ashtray.

Good luck!

About what mileage did all of you have it happen? I'm glad to hear the fix is easy, I just want to know when to expect it. Also, would you say you used Sport a lot?
