Rear Tire Pressure

Why do so many prefer to have higher PSI in the rear tires? Is it the rear wheel drive, or is it just the correct way to go.

I figure this fits more in the suspension category than in the tire section as we are talking about the balance and handling of the car. I have seen some posters refer to the action of the tire as being another spring in the suspension.

higher tire pressures can stiffen up the tire, making it feel more stable/predictable under cornering loads (less side wall flex) and adding a bit of cornering grip.

but weather or not the pressures are higher in the rear than the front will depend on tire size, balance/weight distribution, and suspension settings.
