DIY update to idrive retrofit
Is a DIY update to booster's idrive retrofit valuable? I'm several years late to the game but would like to contribute back to the community if it's valuable. Most of the stuff is online, and credit is due to the community (see end for credit list).
Short summary is that I can fill in all the gaps of the guide, including:
I'm actually not entirely done retrofitting CCC with 6FL, BT, XM, and do have a list of outstanding questions to figure out though:
Credits go to these people for directly and indirectly helping me (in no particular order): Booster4075, lazd, technic, patryk, ralphwarren, Thumperx, smoov8124, M-steep, GTiceman, dasammy, coolamber I am sure I missed someone on the list, but in general this forum has been very open and helpful. Thanks everyone! Dah-Yoh |

Ok, let's start with the following. These are updates to booster's excellent guide. I'm going to edit this post as I write more:
[Misc tips] M1. When removing the key holder bracket, just push out the springs: M2. When removing the air bag, make sure the tool you inserted is about vertical, as otherwise you will miss the release: M3. When removing the center AC trim, pop out the DTC etc button housing before attempting to remove the connectors from it. [CCC retrofit] C1. Pins with wires: 61130005197 (female) 61130005198 (male). You need these to make the Y connector that would tap into pin 37 of connector x14272 at the JBE. (see C2 for more info). If you are happy with spicing wires, ignore C1 - C3. If you'd rather not cut any original wires, read on C2. housing for the C1 pins: 61136931929 (H1) 61138377072 (H2). These are the three pin version of the housing, you can get the two pin version. The Y connector you want to make looks like this: You probably get the idea, but here is a overly complex description of what's going on. Originally, a female pin occupies position 37 of x14272 (call this F37). You have an additional female pin coming from your CID, pin 1 (call this F1), wanting to occupy the same pin. So you unplug F37 from the x14272 housing, and plug both F1 and F37 into your housing (H1). Plug two male pins (with their wires) in the other housing (H2), and connect the two housings together. Now splice the wires from the male pins together with a wire that has a female pin. So, mission accomplished - one female pin becomes two C3. pins without wires - 61138364833 61138364834. These are for tapping into the main radio connector in order to connect the idrive controller. I didn't find ones with wires, so you might need to go to radioshack and get 22 gauge stranded wires and attach the wires. I also didn't find suitable housing for these wires, so you have to shield it properly yourself. Similar to above, you want to make two Y connectors that connect pin 3 of x10387 to pin 11 of x13812, and pin 4 of x10387 to pin 9 of x13812. The connector would look like: C4. CCC bezel 51459120979 C5. AC bezel 64116966407/64116956736... depending on color. C6. CID harness (not the housing, this is the harness that the contacts connect to, and this harness slots into the housing; you can do without the housing) x13822 61131383736 [BT retrofit] B1. Antenna 84506928461 B2. Mic 84316938762 [6FL/USB retrofit] [CCC, BT, 6FL retrofit coding] |
