Anyone Well Up On Large Screen TV's?

Now that we have moved and our new lounge is mahosive I have been looking around for a bigger TV. The new LG keeps getting good reviews, so do the Panasonics & Pioneers.

Does anyone have any recommendations on 50" or 60" screens?

Thanks

Marcus

Personally I've always had Panasonic, they regularly finish top in reviews.
How about this badboy?

Also 3DTV is apparently the next big thing so you may want to consider a '3DTV' ready television. Although I can't see them catching on personally. The tech still has a long way to go IMO

Pioneers win hands down - but alas they stopped making them last year... The top-end Panasonics have generally been filtered upmarket to fill the gap left by Pioneer until they come back on the scene.

I've got a 9th gen Pioneer 50" and it is the best TV i've ever seen!
Give Kevin a call at HiFix (www.hifix.co.uk) for excellent service, impartial knowledge and good prices. I've bought lots of kit from there and it's all been fantastic as he promised!

Id take a good look at the 55" Samsung LED TV's. With a HD feed they are just stunning, and very slim.

I just got a panasonic (42") so cant comment on the 50+, however I'd recommend you go to a panasonic shop - deals are there to be had and the sales team are very knowlegeable (unlike the dicks in currys or comet) . Not only did they match the best competitor price and 5 year guarantee, I persuaded them to give me a free panasonic blue ray player (rrp £169) and a free stand (rrp £149)

+1 with Samsung

I have just bought a 40" LED 8000 series with Sky HD. Fantastic picture, very impressed. The clarity is razor sharp.

Thanks guys, will check that Samsung and will also try and get to a Pana shop.

Would love the Pioneer but couldn't justify paying £3k plus for a TV, I may well give hifix a call so thanks for that.

A lot of it is personal choice. I have an lg led and I chose it because it had the best pic in the shop amongst it's peers. It does get rave reviews.
Have a couple of samsungs in 32 inch guise, non led, and I prefer the lg interface and quality feel to it.
Whip down curries and see some in action. I wouldn't bother with 3d. It's only now we are getting HD sources available free and that is still limited to regions. So 3d has a long way to go, if it catches on.
I think ethernet ports, wifi, built in HD tuners, browsers, hard disks, touchscreens may be worth waiting to see before investing a grand or so.

I run a panasonic TX-50PV10 - if you can source one, get it !
They come highly rated and well reviewed

I'm completely happy with mine, does everything really well, from Bluray DVD's to normal tv, to gaming, and sport tv, compe so well and the picture quality is far better than any LCD, LED and other plasma TV's on the market

It has infinite black, contrast ratio or 2,000,000 : 1 which gives such depth of picture and with Neo PDP technology behind the picture makes everything sharp and crystal clear

Worth looking at

Pioneer Kuro is head and shoulders above anything else out there.

Speak to any qualified AV expert (not the monkeys from Dixons, currys etc) and they will tell you Pioneer rule the large TV market place -

Pioneer kuro was the daddy but as already said they ceased production last year so you can't buy them anymore, I have a 46" samsung myself and the picture is superb I would love to upgrade to a 60" but you are looking at 3k for a good tv of that size

As pioneer have stopped making tv's as everyone says Panasonic get consistently good reviews. If you want to do some research try avforums.com and click on plasma and LCD sub forum. When buying don't forget John Lewis pricematch with free five year warranty.

I recommended the 46 Samsung LED to a good friend.

Setup in his house, away from the bright garish lights of the store, and playing an HD source (even Sky HD) it is nothing short of staggering. Contrast levels are stunning. Life-like picture is captivating. He is delighted, and anybody popping in saying HD isn't anything special leaves with mouth agape.

I had the 55" Samsung for a few weeks. It was also great, though I think the refresh rate didn't go as high (100HZ) as the better 7000, 8000 series 46".

Has to be LED technology. Wouldn't look at a normal LCD as my main TV, though the offers on the larger, older LCD/Plasmas are very tempting for a second/games room.

LCD: Samsung, although last I was considering their sets, they used edge-based LED back lighting which yields slightly less black blacks than full LED back lighting.
Plasma: Panasonic
LED/OLED: I wasn't aware this technology has been applied to large size televisions.

3D: Wait; it's too soon to know which 3D supporting technology will yield the best performance or the best performance for the price. My sense is that the relevant issues will be sorted in a couple years, so if the TV you buy now can fall back to a less prominent role in the future (e.g., moved to yours/kids' bedroom) and be replaced by a super 3D TV in a few years, buy the regular one now and upgrade down the road. If not, make do for a bit until the water clears and then buy the appropriate 3D set at that time.

I have a 42" pioneer plasma (428). I think the Samsung LED's are better than the Pioneer Plasmas. In fact, I think there better than anything else out there currently.

yea like some of the others i really like the samsung, they seem to improve them all of the time, when i baught my 32" 1080p the colour variation and brightness was great, now however they have greatly improved their sets.

They also had a technology [not sure if they continued it] but it was supposidly ment to turn off some of the pixels to achive true black for dark scenes within tv / movies.
