335d Fuel Economy Reduction During Break In Period?
Hi All
A questions about fuel economy performance with my new 335d. I have been driving it like granddad for the first 1200k miles based on the BMW advised break in period, but have found that I could not get anything higher than 34.8 MPG Combined (A roads and Motorway). I have heard of people getting near to 39 MPG! I have heard that other manufactures fuel management systems e.g. Volvo, run their diesels richer for the first 7k miles, thus achieving less fuel economy for the first 7k miles. Once the odometer has reached just over 7k, the fuel economy increases significantly. Does anyone know if BMW incorporates a similar approach with its diesel engines? Thanks LRS

i was seeing 37 -40 for the first 2000 miles now I get 41 - 44mpg.
everybody else seem to get much lower than me, but trust me I do not hang about. Rear tyres are looking quite used after 11k miles.

Managed 40 only on a long run to Cornwall. Last tankfull gave 34MPG, mixed driving, no complaints it's slightly better than our last e46 330d auto used to return.

My Focus ST has been returning much less than 30 Mpg and I can just about eek 31Mpg on a motorway journey by keeping at speeds less than 75. I am looking forward to being able to use a bit of that 335d torque and still significantly better fuel consumption
And it would appear that diesel is cheaper than petrol at a lot of garages |

I've done just over 9,000 miles and overall I get 35.6mpg (according to the OBC) but the big diesel seems quite thirsty for short runs, and I don't think the auto is good for stop-start driving, in terms of economy. Just out of interest, how many miles do you get out of a tankful, and what does the OBC show (range) after you fill up?

How on earth are you managing to get such high MPG??? I really have been babying my driving for the last 1200 miles and have come nowhere near what your getting. What is your secret? Also as Red-Max has asked - how many miles do you get out of a tankful, and what does the OBC show (range) after you fill up? Thanks

I filled-up with about £60 worth of diesel on Monday. I've been travelling to my office every day this week. Normally I work from home at least 2 days a week
OBC states that I've covered 430 miles with 120 miles remaining in the tank, so far and this doesn't cover my journey home tonight. I've averaged 44.1mpg The journey is mixture of urban-crawl through a one-way system, to the M25 and then round from Watford to the M11 and then up to Stansted Airport followed by about 10miles (of spirited B-road) driving to where I live. So far I'm very impressed with the economy. I haven't been 'ragging' it much, because of weight of traffic, but still chuffed none the less

all of my driving is town driving and ive done a manual calculation which i think points to the fact that the OBC is wrong. ive covered 404 on 13 gallons which equals 31mpg which is ok, why does the computer tell me otherwise

I can come at this from a 535d perspective. I regularly get 500+ miles from a tank. The tank holds 70 litres, but I've never managed to put in more than 63! Anyway, the OBC for ages was telling me that I've been averaging 33.2mpg, dropping to 32.8 occasionally.
If I never get less than 500 miles from a tank, and have never put more than 63 litres in, then it stands to reason that I should be getting about 33.3 as an average! Damn those inaccurate OBC's. LOL Having said that, if you don't reset the OBC regularly it'll take ages for the more realistic mpg figure to appear. Mine was showing 19mpg for ages following a dealer visit. it was clearly doing almost twice that, but the OBC hadn't caught up. Oh, and in response to the first question, the engine will loosen up nicely at about 10k miles and you'll only then get a reasonably clear indication of mpg. Cheers Matt |

Probably a really stupid question, but how do you reset the OBC? LRS

I get a consistent 24 miles to the gallon and my chosen petrol (shell v-power 99ron) costs more per gallon than deisel.
Am I bothered? Look at my face I'm not even bothered. |

Almost exclusively city stop-start driving for about 5 miles each way a day.
Presently sitting at 31 mpg. Considering my Jag was averaging 16mpg over the same route, I'm happy D.

Use the left hand (indicator) stalk end to scroll through the 4 options in the middle of the instrument binnacle, mpg, mph, miles left in tank and nothing. When you get to mpg, reset it using the stalk. I think you press and hold for a few seconds from memory. Cheers Matt |

Now we know why Needforspeed & Z4 Beemer find fuel economy so interesting, not.

My OBC is reading 33.2mpg although I have not reset it since the car was new (1500 miles ago). I have drove it relatively hard since new: i.e - no break-in period.
Defo more thirsty than my remapped 330cd manual. Damn that slushmatic!!!

Does the slushbox have different modes - like sport, economy etc... or am I thinking of autos from decades ago
