Looking to get tools for an oil chagne

I have motor oil and oil filter so far, what other tools do I need to do an oil change? Thanks.

I've been able to successfully use any one of four tools: Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover. Each can be easily obtained for free via the Internet. With any of these tools, you won't need motor oil or a filter.

Don't forget a drain pan large enough to hold all the fluid. Find a place to recycle it too, such as http://earth911.com/ will help.

I dunno (Sears?), never used a ramp; I use jackstands.

Don't get the ranches because they won't help you. DO get a 17MM wrench or socket wrench for the drain plug. An oil catch pan that holds 10 quarts (the car takes 7, but you'll need to carry the pan full of oil and you need room for it to slosh around). Also, a funnel to pour the oil in to the engine, and a oil filter cap wrench (I think it is 87 MM but I could be wrong); get the cap wrench for the oil filter cover because it is the easiest way to remove the oil filter cover. You'll also need a turkey baster (or the automotive equivalent) to get the few ounces of oil that sit in the oil filter housing.

And ramps or jackstands and a jack to get the front end up in the air. And get an auto mechanics dental pick to remove the O-rings from the oil filter cap.

And shop rags.

Oh and a large flatblade screw driver or quarter to remove the cover on the belly pan to get to the drain bolt.

Basically all covered above, so can't really add anything other than:

Oil pan to take at least 7 litres (500ml more than engine oil max), have the engine up to temperature before draining the oil, but be careful of the obviously now hot oil when draining, when loosening and tightening the filter housing cap, be gentle and turn slowly.

The oil filter cap wrench (ranch

) tool that I have is actually a Volvo part (

) and while it works, it is probably 0.5 mm too big, so it tends to hold onto the filter cap and being metal, gets really hot from the still hot filter cap! It does have a hole at the top where the hex is, so can always gently press it off, but it does come off easily after tightening the filter cap back on, just gently turn back and it releases...

Enjoy, this is actually a really easy job and very satisfying!

It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger
