Has your NEW car been used for test drives?
For people that are ordering their cars: What is the acceptable milage at delivery? Anotherwords, what would be the maximum you would accept?
The reason I'm asking is that I might be out of town when the vehicle arives and I wouldn't appreciate if dealership used it for test drives. Last 5 cars I had, I bought new and they all had less than 10 miles on it.

If it's an ordered car then it should only have a few miles on it. Dealers usually put a sold sign on an ordered car and the CA keeps all the keys so that no one could touch it. There's no reason for them to put your car on the lot.
I think you're giving this too much thought though my friend. |

So, should I call CA and tell him how much I'd "appreciate" if my car stays a virgin or not?

Yeah, it should probably have less than 10 miles, maybe less than 5. But, things do happen. I went by a Lexus shop looking at Is250s, and they didn't have one outfitted like we wanted to look at. The salesman went in the back to look, and found one coming off the truck - not cleaned, mats and junk in the trunk, etc. I told him that was fine, and off we went. When we got back, the sales manager was looking for it. Yep, it was already sold. But now it had 11 more miles on it.

I'm not a picky person about this sort of thing. However, two thing come to mind. Test driving a BMW, I let the salesman drive the car(don't ask me why) he was at redline and 50 + mph over the speed limit burning the tires off the thing the whole time. I feel sorry for who ever bought that car.Secondly,a test ride I took on a Yamaha dirt bike where I screamed the thing for all it was worth for several minutes. If I bought either,I would have asked for a new one.

I work part time as a driver for a BMW center, and our sales manager always asks us to put 5 miles on new cars (never exceeding 15) to make sure that no problems arise while driving.
I remember doing this to an M6 and getting pretty rough ride for the first 3 miles, and reported it back to the manager. He told me that is normal for M5 and M6! The cylinders need to shave off rough edges in the piston, and the rough ride is because of things needing to be broken in. Now it all makes sense. I think anything under 20 is acceptable. Test drive cars get about 5 miles per drive, so in a day our cars take about 75miles, which would be unacceptable.

I can see the dealer putting 4-5 gentle miles on to make sure all is well. If I was ordering the car, and planing to buy it, I'd be upset if my ordered car had more than 10.
Mine was on the lot, so I got a great deal, but it had about 250 miles on it. I'm sure they were hard-earned miles too, but I'm leasing it. I don't much care.

Mine came with 3 miles on it. I agree with the general consensus that over 10 and the CA should explain where the miles came from.

when I went and asked for a testdrive of a 335, the CA (fairly clueless) told me to test a 335 that someone is picking up tomorrow. Needless to say I felt pretty bad for the guy who ordered it, but I was very gentle and added only 2 miles on it.
Just tested it to convince myself, I don't need automatic.

I think we have more than enough info from the forum and our personal experience. 3 miles is about the right mileage, if you get your vehicle right off the car carrier, to the prep, to delivery. Mine had 4, I didn't pick it up the day it came in, so they had to drive it to the garage overnight and back to the dealership. Since this is often something that we wait 6+ weeks for, the dealership should merely take it off the truck, prep it, and hand it over. Nobody should be sitting in it, testing it, etc.
There are dozens of E90 335's on any given lot, people should be driving them, sitting in them, etc. Not a vehicle that has been ordered with a name assigned to it. |

I will make sure that my CA is well aware of the fact that I will absolutely kick him in the nuts if I see anything over 5 miles on odo.
Nuf said.

I am asked for the past 2 M6s we have sold (both ordered) to put 3-5 miles on it however (they were both SMG). And it was rough for the first 5 minutes of the drive. 3s, 5s never get driven. Ordered cars are not used for test drives. I would never use a customer car to run an errand. I apologize for the miscommunication.
