DIY: Alcantara interior trim - Edited with pics of final results
I'll update with more pics once finished. I know there a some other DIYs for this, but i just wanted to clarify a few things and give a few tips.
Do this if you want to replace your interior trim, but with something less obnoxious than corbon fiber. Refer to any carbon fiber covering thread for general instruction. First of all you want to buy your alcantara. You can get fake suede in every fabric shop for about 10$ a meter. I bought superior quality material for about 40$ a meter because it had more of this “strokes are appearent” effect. If you feel like it, you can buy real alcantara for about 80$ a meter online. I used less than a meter for the whole interior, but if you want to go safe buy 1.5, as you may mess up some parts. You will also need spray adhesive, i used elmer's all purpuse spray glue. So here is how you will do this 1-Remove your interior trim (use the search function, there is a few threads already covering this. 2-Cut a piece of suede/alcantara exeding the part you want to cover by about an inch on each side. 3-Spray glue on your trim and try to align the fabric in the best way possible (be careful, the glue bonds really fast.) 4-Cut the excess fabric, and use small binder clips to hold the fabrig tight on the side of you trim. 5-Usually, you will need to respray glue under the binder clips to make the side of you alcantara cover hold. However SPRAY THE GLUE ON THE TRIM, NOT ON THE FABRIC. If you spray on the trim, the glue will pass straight trough. 6-Pay special attention to the corners use a lot of glue to make them hold. I read in other DIY that if you touched the alcantara after touching glue, you have to start over. As it may be true that glue will alter the finish, you will be able to restore your alcantara back to normal by using contact glue solvant. Il'l post more pics on request ! This is much easier than it looks lilke! [EDIT] I covered my trim in blue painter's tape to make this mod reversible. [EDIT] I re-did the center console today. I was able to glue the corners really tight by holding them with string. Attached are pictures of the strings and finale results. picture 1 : strings http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4b47d8aa.jpg picture 2 : final result http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps98c78d6a.jpg I know it needs some brushing Reply if you have any other questions ! I've been too chicken shit to do this, but I REALLY want to. I hate having a black interior with a light gray headliner and pillar covers..... Might have to look into this seriously.

It looks like you have SS trim, are you going to do the dash also? If so, what's your game plan to tackle it?

Yes, doing a O.K. job on the center console may be easy, but perfection is difficult to achieve.
The ashtray and shift boot holes are pretty easy. The only thing you got to have in mind is to keep them corners clean, and this is easy with the "string" technique. If you want pictures of this, on the edit of the first post, follow the link for "picture 1". I know the pictures may not look good, but trust me, it came out perfectly, my cellphone camera just isn't very good in low-lightning situations and make it look like its brownish and dirty. The part you'll need to focus on is the third hole on the center console (the closest to you). To get this one right, your best bet would be to let an excessive amount of fabric in the hole, and then fitting the part that goes in it like you can. After that you should be able to pull the fabric under the center console with pliers, making a tight fit around the hole. This may require a few tries, keep on going, you'll get it ! Let me know if something is not clear ! -M |

I may try to do this this summer. I hate my wood trim, but also feel that the CF wrap is getting played out too heavily.
What was that you were saying about the string technique?

I just finished doing the small SS part around the vent at the left of the steering wheel, and it went just fine. I applied the strategy described in the first post and it worked just fine. It is very forgiving compared to the center console because of vents are holding the fabric in place when you put them back on. |

No lol I understood that part, but do you have a picture demonstrating how you used the string?

Hi,
This looks nice . I know it's an old thread but I hope you can help me . I wanted to do something similar but only if it's reversible. I'm not sure how easy would it be to get the alcantara hold to the masking tape. If I lay the alcantara over the masking tape, wouldn't it go loose if the tape losses it's grip? How well does it hold over the time especially on corners? Did you ever take it off to reveal the actual trim? Thanks appreciate your help |

Yes it will hold, you need to use the spray and he sieve on top of whatever you cover the trim pieces with. I know this because I wrapped all my trim pieces with carbon fiber vinyl and just recently rewrap them with a swing material and did it right over the vinyl on purpose so if I ever wanted it off I would just take off the vinyl with the suede material he still attached. I have a brief DIY I posted that you could take a look at.! |

You installed it over the carbon wrap, I guess i'd be doing something similar, just over the painter's tape in my case. I hope the tape sticks to the trim without issue especially over time. Cheers |

In my experience as long as you put enough of the spray andhesive you will be fine. Just make sure to talk all edges and corners and you'll be fine.

Do you know how thin the alcantara material was that you used? Thinnest I can find is around 0.8mm. Not sure if i'd be able to tuck that in. Last edited by nomyy; 02-17-2017 at 10:54 AM.. |
