Do not 100% rely on the radar detector. It can only warn you if the cop was aiming at the car in front of you. If the cop aimed at your car, you were done. I've got 3 speeding tickets even I've got a radar detector in my car and it went off but it was too late. The worse, the cop will definitely give you a speedy ticket as soon as he saw the detector. Since then, I sold the radar detector and drive carful and never drive on the fast lane by myself and always follow some one and let the guys in front of you to get the ticket first. It works all time for me.

Radarbusters.com sells radar detectors if I am not mistaken. If so, they are not to be trusted to give objective advice. I have two Valentine V-1 detectors and have been most pleased over more than 10 years. They work as advertised. I have no interest in Valentine.

I just got my new Bel RX55 from Radarbusters.com. Regardless on what is a better product; I have had used 2 Bel detectors in the past 7 years. And I have been lucky so far.
So I gave my old Bel 940 to my wife, and bout the RX55. I have heard the V1 is good, but..hy, I don't have $400+ to spend. And Bel has done a very good job to save me (when I was doing 130MPH on I-5, it saved me for a big one).

As for the Va. law..... as long as you have VG2 detection and cloaking which most high end detectors have the cops can't get you. There radar detector detector is non effective. As for the Valentine products.... they WERE good a few years ago but they are outdated; they are useless to POP guns. I had one and it was great but there are better ones out now, the Beltronics and Escort to name a few (the newest best models). EDIT: the V1 now comes with POP detection included: The manufacturer of the Valentine 1 (maybe the most expensive dash mounted radar detector available) has until recently discredited POP radar and refused to use this technology. However, they now include POP radar capabilities with their new version. Tthe V1 comes with the POP radar mode activated, with no way to turn it off. This substantially increases the number of false alerts this unit receives. Autoweek magazine review of the 1.8 version of the Valentine 1 referred to it as the "Chicken Little" of radar detectors because of all its false alarms. That is correct, for LADAR they have to stand still and they also have to be out of the car since the laser doesnt go through the window. Valentine imo is very outdated and has the only advantage of knowing where the radar is coming from. I'd recommend the Passport 8500x. It's even 100 bux cheaper! the gadget looks cool too

i personally like the escort passport x50. I tried both the x50 and the v1 and i have to admit the v1 did catch signals quicker than the x50 but for the valentine, you have to look to the left and see what band it is (x,k,ka,laser, pop) and then look at how strong the signal is. but the x50 has one screen so you can look at what band and the strengh of the signal at once. overall their both great detectors and you cant go wrong with either one

I personally use an escort passport 8500, best radar in the world imo. It catches cops 1-2 miles away....thats almost 1/2 a minute before i even pass them.

Also people are full of BS when they say it saved them from a ticket with LASER (LIDAR,LADAR) this is a flase statement since as soon as they shoot you and the detector goes off, they already got you accurately and you have no time to slow. They must not have been going "fast enough" for the cop to go get them and make it worth his/her time. Last edited by mapezzul; 10-28-2005 at 08:14 AM.. |

Laser is a beam of light in the infrared spectrum. When officers use a laser gun, they target individual cars that they want to obtain a speed on, and active the gun by pulling the trigger. The beam of light that strikes your car is very narrow and reading the officer gets is instant. Therefore NO RADAR/LASER detector is effective against this type of traffic enforcement. There are no federal prohibitions of laser jammers, as laser is controlled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under CFR 21, subpart 1040, 1041 for eye safety. However three states have enacted laws banning the ownership, sale and use of laser jammers they are Minnesota (Minnesota Statutes 2002, 169.14) California (Sec. 1, Ch 493.28150, effective January 1999) and Utah (C. 41-6-52.7, 1998) |

__________________________________________________ __The V-1 also uses different tones to indicate K, X, Laser, etc. You can get quite a bit of information without looking at all. One of the greatest things about Valentine Research, in my opinion, is that their units are upgradeable. One of my V-1s is 10 years old and has all the latest goodies. |
