Problem for me is I would want nav, would want smart phone integration, would want leather, would want auto, would want xenons and would not own another BMW without the Harman Kardon upgrade. That puts a 320d modern/sport/efficient dynamics saloon at £39,000, so over £40,000 for the touring when it arrives. Say £36,000 after discount? I just can't get my head round paying that sort of money for a 320d. You can buy a 6 month old 530d sport touring for that, you can buy a 12 month old 730d for that. Same with the X3, I was considering one of those, but it was £45,000 with not a great spec. £51,000 with the things I wanted. X1 at £20k a year old made far more sense. |

In my eyes a very good spec new 320d should be about £28000 / £29000. The only car that seems good value To me is new 2012 Audi S4. Broadspeed are offering some cracking deals on them , and I could get a very high spec S4 saloon for under £40000. Personally if it's as good as they say I'd say stuff the extra 10 /13 mpg saving and go for the safety of 4x4 and the big leap in performance. Hope you and the family had a good Christmas Guy |

I plan on staying put in the 'vert this year and shifting it on Summer 2013. I'll replace it with an N55 if tuning solutions are good by then but if not I guess a runaround until the 4-series is out on the second hand market.

The S4 is nice, I had one for a day in avant form with the dsg 'box and loved it. I was getting around 26mpg from it for the whole day, which I thought was pretty good, and say at 80mph on the motorway it was seeing 34mpg. I would certainly have one if I could get away with the size, but just slightly too small for me as a main car. Boot space I mean. Yeah all good here mate, Christmas was nice, just a bit short. |

Gizze, can you explain more about how you could drive a new Merc for the same money as your current older car, interested in that.
Also Chris would be interested in hearing a bit more about how you have a better car for your wife than her old one and have cash in the bank. I am very attracted by leasing but when I look closely at the deals they never seem to stack up. I have two fairly expensive cars, 335d and X5, one owned outright and other with a loan approx 50% of value therefore would love to go down a route of freeing up some equity. |

What I meant was...
I bought my E320cdi 2 years ago for £18k cash. I then decided that I wanted to finance it so borrowed £13k on it over 36 months, I think it was, which cost me £350 a month. I could contract hire a new E250cdi sport estate, Edition 125 so all the toys, for £310+vat a month, so around £20 more than my 5 year old 100k car. Sure, the car is not mine at the end, but knowing me I will sell it before the finance is paid and I own this anyway, and I will probably not get anything back out of it, I will just clear the finance. If I pay it off and run it for another 5 years it will be cheap motoring (if nothing goes wrong) but I can't see myself doing that. At the end of the day I buy a car, run it for a year or two and then sell it and buy something else, right now contracting hiring them is cheaper than buying them. We were discussing the contract hire deals on the Merc forum, and I posted this on there.... Quote:

Great detailed answer, I'm sure if I thought about it enough I could find a few holes in the logic but as it stands a brand new Merc for £300 a month can't be bad.
Any hot deals on Minis, Cooper S or SD was what I looked at a while back for my wife. |
