Here is the commonwealth of Virginia you pay (for a lease mind you) sales tax on the FULL value of the car the day the lease starts.

In addition, every year you get assesed property tax! Gotta love paying PROPERTY tax on something that is not even your PROPERTY. Their reasoning is they dont tax you, they tax the leasing company (BMWFS) who in turn taxes you. Under the same (il)logic apartment dwellers should have the property tax passed on to them too!

Don't get me wrong, I know taxes are a way of life, but if you are going to tax people that much on their automobiles, at least have some decent roads (of which we DO NOT!)

I do not live here by choice, and once my military service is up I will be moving!

+1 Thankfully, our real estate and income taxes are low. At least we have that over Mass.

Nevada => 1.2% property tax ("Government Service Tax") on cars, annual at registration renewal.

But we don't have state income tax of any kind.

Yep - it's like a road tax to use your car - your town normally sends you a bill every year when you own it - looks like your lease company f'ed up and never sent it to you annually. Mine 335 vert is about 900 first year - every year after that it is usually half the year before, but the first year is nasty! My 96 volvo is about 50 bucks!!

MN has personal property tax on vehicles too. It's a sliding scale based on the value of the car, paid annually with your registration renewal.

I wanted to clarify the excise tax in MA when it comes to vehicles.

Yes, it is assessed every year, and if you have a leased vehicle, BMW FS pays it and you'll see it reflected in your lease statement. Now, this assessment is based on the value of your vehicle by roughly X dollars per thousand. As your vehicle depreciates in value, so does the excise tax you owe. It actually drops pretty significantly after the first couple years of ownership. My fiance I believe pays less than $100/year for her 2004 CRV.

I remember when I moved to Taxachussets over 10 years ago from NY, and they started sending me a bill for the excise tax (I think it was for about $50. I had a 94 Probe GT at that time). Coming from NY, I had no idea what excise tax was, and just thought it was junk mail! After awhile, I received an official letter in the mail that they were going to take out a warrant to collect my excise tax! Well at that point I realized this was NOT junk mail and promptly paid my 50 bucks.

The NY state public school system isn't horrible but at around $15,000 per student per year it should be a hell of a lot better than it is. src
An officemate's daughter got into Princeton as a graduate of White Plains High School, and his younger daughter is on the same track. Maybe his 20k per year property tax is outrageous for such a tiny house, but a friend is sending her son to an elite private school for about 30k per year. He's only in the 5th grade. Yes, the two experiences are far different (the son just went to a b-day party at an NBA head coach's house), but how much different is the end result if all 3 kids go to Princeton? I'd stick with what I know, the public education.

The degree will only be the start, the rest of the career is up to the individual. I have one kid who works with me that went to FSU. Bright kid with a bright future, he holds his own among the others who have elite educations.

Life is what it is, if you don't get what you pay for, then you have millions of people paying lots of hard-earned money for nothing. Not all of us want to live in low cost of living places, there is a trade-off.

I'm in CT and I'm sick of paying property tax on cars. If your car is a few years old, it's not too bad but on new cars forget it. So you pay income tax on the money you use to buy the car, you pay sales tax when you buy it and then you pay property tax every year you own it.

In Maine you pay 5% on the contract price of a sale, or on your payments in a lease.
Then excise, when you register the car. 44K car = 1250 1st year, 1000 2nd year, 675 each year after that.

all to pay for our shitty roads.
ouch.

Those prices look similar to CT and our roads suck also.

Which one did you use? I'm looking for coverage of aftermarket wheels / tires.
