Leasing / contract hire (same thing) is the cheapest way to have a new car, bar none.

Non-dealer lease firms will have the best deals as dealers know they can get away with charging more.

Even though your 3rd party supplied car will be always be supplied to you by a franchised dealer anyway! Why lease from BMW when you can lease from Joe bloggs who will just order it from BMW at a much better price than you can get.

Pcp is just glammed up HP and most definitely nothing like CH.

In the UK we have a strange hang up about "not owning" the car. Time get over it I reckon.

Contract is great but not always If you want options (no residual value with most I have seen) Whatever is cheapest but with stunning discounts via BMW contributions and dealer discount don't rule out pcp plus if you do low miles you might have equity

I'm probably being stupid but why is this a 2012 car and why are they charging 40 a month for "maintenance" when I am limited to 20k miles and the service interval is quoted as 30k?

Leasing is best when you pick the "offers" or bargains, cars they are trying to promote or shift a few of with crazy offers. All things being equal I wouldn't have had a merc, so their subsidising has worked on me (and plenty of others too).

The cheapest are what they call a "BOL" basic operating lease, that is the car delivered with 1 years tax and that's it,

No maintenance or yr2 tax or anything, and you'd better get some cheap GAP insurance as you're liable for damage / total loss in most lease contracts.

Also, check the excess mileage, it can be better to go fo a lower mileage lease and then aim to pay the excess instead if you go over it. Mines only 9p/mile excess.

Circumstances change and you don't get a refund if you do LESS than the lease limit..

Yes, but cars are disposable, steeply depreciating assets, almost like a washing machine, nothing like a house.

And for lifelong house renting to be a viable option into retirement (like in France or Germany) you need a system skewed in favour of long term tenants rights, not landlord profits. Things like capped cheap rents, lifetime contracts and option-to-buy at reduced price on retirement like they have there.

Not sky high rip off rents, scumbag landlords, and 6 months maximum terms like we have here.

But that's another story.....

Agree, options are a killer, so go fo a car that has what you want. But even PCP only gives residual value on major options like NAVs and Leather etc.

Agree, my E63 is on a 20k 2 year lease, and they offered a £60 a month
"maintenance pack", but it will only need 1 oil change at 15K, so £1440 seemed a joke for that, it does hold 11 litres of oil though

That's why I avoided the M5 in the end, it needs minimum of £5grand of options (i.e. £200+ per month) to even get close to the E63, which has everything and more as standard.

Leather, xenons and auto wipers are your main goodies.
The rest are small idrive screen, non run flats, ferric grey alloys and mirrors, questionable whether this even counts?!
You pay for it but the creamy six pot and albeit a sound symposer do a sexy job of nice noises.

Standard also means any colour as long as its white. And DAB is standard along with expected stuff such as usb, aux and Bluetooth.

The Mrs has put only 2k miles on her car since April so it does work for some people.

I know if I only had to travel to the station everyday I'd have a M5 outside. Not so tempting doing 30k a year though.

Yep, you're right, the pence/mile becomes ridiculous.

£300/m for 5kpa is 72p/mile before fuel or anything.

But the excess mileage charge will only be about 10p/mile, so extra miles are much cheaper than the initial miles.

So if you did 10kpa on a 5kpa lease with 10p/mile excess that would only cost you £500 extra to pay (=£41/m) at the end of the lease.

But if you quote a 10kpa lease it will likely be the same or more than that extra, and you don't get it back if you do less.

People feel "safe" going for the higher mileage bracket, the lease firms know this, but in reality its nearly always better to go for the lower mileage and budget for excess payments, that way you only pay for what you use, rather than line their pockets for miles you might not cover.
