Red brake light won't go off after BRAKES DONE=T

Testing, hopefully I got this right.

Recently I just had my rear brakes done (rotors, brake pads and brake sensor) on my BMW 325i 2006. And had the mechanic reset the rear to 100% with the snap on computer with everything seeming fine.

Just when I turn on the ignition the "red brake" stays on. And I couldn't figure out why it does this...I went to 3 auto mechanics and they're all giving me different answers, and it's frustrating not knowing who to trust when you just moved in a new neighborhood.

To add to this the car lift red symbol comes on too every time I insert the key.
Could it be the front sensor than if it's reading -------???

Need help, pls advise?

Thanks,

The Brake light means your e-brake is engaged. Since you replaced the rotors as well as the pads, chances are the e-brake needs minor adjustment. I know mine did when I last replaced the rotors on my e30.

Would the adjustment be under the shift boot or would it be near the rear rotors???

Any possible it might be the brake sensor?

I don't know how it is on the e90, but on the e30 I had to take off the rotors to make the adjustement since the e-brake pads were making contact with the rotor even when the e-brake was disengaged.

This light is also for brake pressure/fluid level, have you checked the level?

Thanks for the tip, and also lift" service light at startup, I was also confused the first time the e-brake light came on for that.

The fluid looks good I just checked, not sure how to check pressure....BMW wants 170 to diagnose the problem yikes!. i'll talk to my mechanic about my pressure.

Try the manual reset with the bc stalk could be a bad sensor not registering. Also look at your service info to determine what sensors are reading. Apply your e brake to check for tightness or looseness.

when you got your back brakes replaced did you put a new sensor on? I have had the brake light on in my car for a while now and BMW told me the sensor needed to be recalibrated on mine and wanted $120 to recalibrate.

These cars use brake force distribution, which causes all 4 brakes to pretty much wear at the same rate. Check the front brakes for need of replacement.

maybe the sensor is bad? i read on here that sometimes the light will still stay on if the sensor is a defective sensor... i just changed my brakes like 2 weeks ago and i had the service light and brake light on, once i changed everything my mechanic reset everything and it was fine after that...so if its still on something is off

If you reset the brake service without putting in a new sensor, then it will show ------ miles and give a constant brake warning.

Is it front or rear that's giving you the -------? Maybe the mechanic accidentally reset the front brake service as well.

folow up.

I have the same issue initially with my rear pads. I had that reset and then the front one is showing to be yellow on my navigation screen for "service info". Did the mechanic pull a fast one here? Did they just reset my rears and then trip off the front? Because it was showing green prior to me resetting the rear sensors. They said I have about 1/4 break pad left on the front. Would this set off the brake sensors? ~thanks in advance.

He wouldn't be able to trip the front's to indicate yellow. They would be red if they need to be replaced (meaning the sensor was tripped). The computer gives a recommendation of replacement based on miles. I believe its 60k miles or so.

How many miles do you have?

I replaced pads and rotors at 71k miles.

Not true. This feature is only active under maximum braking.

Well, no it is always active and is designed to compensate for the avaialble traction at each wheel during braking. The front brakes on all cars are larger than rear brakes because they are designed to take the majority of the braking load to stop a car. EBFD allows for the system to effectively use the rear brakes more as they can be controlled through the ABS hardware not to lock but give maximum braking force during braking. Being there is a size difference between the front and rear brakes, in most situations with BMWs, which have near perfect weight distribution, the front and rear brakes tend to wear at the same rate. As evidence, I've gone through two sets of brakes and all four wore out within 2,000 miles of each other - this happened twice, once at 75K and again at 193K.

I'm at 67k miles. Rears were replaced at 32k. They're about to be replaced again soon here. Original front brakes are still good to go.

I need to stop activating DTC so much ...

to the OP, get the error code read. I'd guess defective replacement sensors. Were OEM ones used?

I wonder how the mechanic compressed the caliper? Forcing the brake fluid back can cause some issues if he didn't compress the caliper with the bleed nut open.

What we always had to do with the e46 when the sensor triped was turn the car to on (engine off) for 30-90 seconds until the light turned off. Not sure if it works on th e9x but its worth a shot

You are partially correct. Yes it is always active, but on standby. For normal braking conditions, the difference from front to rear is designed into the master cylinder and is called brake bias. EBFD controls the brake bias in heavy braking along with DSC activation. Normal driving is purely mechanical on all BMW cars. If your brakes last that long you either drive mostly highway or drive like grandma. My X5 goes through front pads and roters every 19k miles and rears every 35k miles. My 335 goes through rear pads first. My rears are good for an average 16k miles and fronts 30k+ if were to leave them on. If you "DRIVE" a BMW, you do not get even pad life. You get your brake life based on you driving style not the vehical.

Recently replaced the rear pads when the warning came in (was indicating 1000 miles left). Upon inspection the warning was pretty accurate. Did not replace the sensor because it was not damaged, but did buy one. After replacing the pads, tried to reset the warning. All I could get it to display was ------- on the rear. Tried to reset it several times with the same results. I am not sure if I accidently reset the front, but it was also showing ------ and the red lift indicator was displaying. Installed the new sensor in the rear and then tried the reset - showed 1200 miles and the front was ----- with the red lift indication still on. Took the old sensor and cut it 2" below the connector and stripped the insulation back to expose the 2 wires and taped these together. Disconnected the front brake pad sensor at the junction box and plugged in the modified sensor. Performed a reset and everything reset and displayed properly, 36000 front and 24000 back. Removed the modified sensor and reinstalled the front sensor and everything is good to go. Hope this helps others with reseting the brake warnings.
