Mines done .. Got a 5MPG improvement over the same journey and now definitely am aware of regens ( never sensed one before ) also had a slight hesitation on light throttle every now and again at about 1750 revs which appears to have gone now too.

Yes I do , although I did wonder if i did not because the custom exhaust I have plus the seriously disgusting 90's peugeot 306 DTurbo stink that emanates from the pipes!

Got mine finished late on Saturday night. Not had a chance to check the MPG but it runs at a lot better temp.

Between 88 - 97 now. Compared to 65 before.

Tim,
Is your d smokey? I've never seen a BMW d with a DPF blowing smoke, the two I've had always kept the exhaust tips spotless!

It shouldn't stink like that! Mine doesn't smell at all.

Just a quick thanks for this guide, changed the thermostat on my 335d yesterday.

Slight difference between the 335 & 330 as there is a mounting bolt holding the air box to turbo pipe on that isn't mentioned, no big deal just incase anyone else reads this.

I filled the egr cooler up before I put the stat back on and it seemed to make bleeding easy.

Oh and top tip, make sure you don't drop any bolts

Reviving an old thread - will be giving this a go soon if the egr stat i ordered does not resolve issue of temp dropping on motorway, having had a 530d, 335d and now 330d, i am confident that either both or one of the thermostats need changing as temperature drops from 80+ locally to 60 or so on motorways and i have not felt a single regeneration in the 400+ miles so far

In the past a thermostat change has shown quick warm up times and stable 90+ degrees temp regardless of type of journey

Changing thermostat on the N57 330D is quite different.

did mine tonight.... took 3 hours and its all back together ready for coolant in the morning...a fair bit harder than the days of a mk3 escort or astra gte where the thermostat was just three bolts right in front of you with nothing else to take off!

I would just add that make sure you have a good range of extension bar lengths and a flexible drive wouldn't go amiss either.

coolant done, bled and road tested - sits at 88 degrees nicely now took it up to 90 degrees, back home, checked for leaks and topped up with half a litre. Job done. hopefully see a slight increase in mpg.

Sorry for digging up an old thread but just wanted to see if you think £160 for a specialist indi to do the job inc parts seems reasonable?

I would do it myself but a) dont really have the spare time and b) don't want to freeze my nuts off doing it outside this time of the year

yeah £160 seems reasonable if they use BMW oem parts, main stats and EGR. Think mine came to about £105 just on parts alone.

My 325d msport has been dropping fuel economy and i feel i am having the thermostat problem just coming up on 70000 miles.

i assume the thermostats are the same for the 325 and 330

cheers

What are you guys getting to a full tank before changing to your thermostats?
I have the occasional slight hesitation just below 2k revs that's mentioned in this thread.

Haven't done the hidden menu tenp check so no idea what I'm running at

is this easy to do when the manifold is off? or does having the manifold off not make a difference?

Manifold off makes no difference. Take the radiator fan out though. It's really simple, it's retained by one bolt. Make sure you place it back in its guides at the bottom of the rad when putting it back in.

Do you need to remove the radiator fan to change the main stat? Mine is an auto 330d and the radiator fan can't be removed without detaching the transmission cooling pump thing at the bottom of the fan housing.

For information I replaced my main stat with a Circoli stat from ECP in May 2013. For the past few months my coolant temp has rarely exceeded 60 C and MPG has suffered. Of course ECP only warrant the Circoli stat for 12 months. False economy when OEM BMW stat has a 2 year warranty.

I ran Dash Command on mine today out of interest, and after a 20 min or so drive and a few decent pulls I couldn't get it over 73 degrees, so I assume I need to get mine changed soon too!
Since I got the car (about 18 months ago) the MPG is usually around 37-38 which I was happy with, it would be nice if I gained a few more after changing the stat though
