It turned out that the new EGR thermostat was faulty, I could blow through it. I bought a new one and now coolant temperature is stable at 90-91 degrees.

Same here! I've tried 2 OEM BMW egr stats from the dealers. Both died very quickly.

I wonder if there is something that causes them to fail prematurely.

FYI I changed auxiliary heater. No more fault codes but it doesn't effect temps in any way.

Can someone share the part number for the EGR thermostat? I can't seem to locate it on Realoem...

Cheers

Below is the link for the EGR thermostat for 2005 E90 330d.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_3597

I changed mine at the weekend, access to bolts etc. can be an issue at times. Write up really helped. Water currently leaking between EGR thermostat and EGR heat exchanger. Just waiting on the little O-ring from the dealer to sort this. I didn't notice it during the change and a new one didn't come with thermostat.

i've got a thermostat code on my E90 320i n43 - is it fairly similar? i've looked online and it looks a whole load more complex

apologies if i'm asking questions with obvious answers - a complete newbie here - i also need to regenerate my NOx cat after fitting a new NOx sensor over the weekend but got no idea how so any help or pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. Plus i dont wanna burn out a new sensor due to rich fuel burn because it still has the 30ea which stops the car going into stratified charge mode the part was like £300 but its the sub 20mpg for the last few months thats the real killer
