Looking to buy a 07 335i

They're asking 22k for it, I'm going to offer 19.5k

It has 57k miles, premium, sport, navi, the options, 6 speed manual.

He said he's replaced the vanos solenoids about 13k ago and it needs new tires, no word about the HPFP. Needs new tires + normal wear + a burn mark from a polisher on the right of the rear bumper cover.

Apart from the price (is it good), what else should I look out for here? Going to check it out tonight.

Turbo rattle. Unless he's already had them replaced I can guarantee they're bad at that mileage. Check for signs of modification too.

He said it wasn't modded and the previous owners were of the "take it to the BMW dealership to do maintenance" types.

He should have service records if that's the case. It's in the details.

So I got the car inspected and everything looks fine and in sync with what the seller told me except that it threw two engines codes

2F6C - Exhaust Gas Flap
2D25 - Manipulation preventive, max air mass

Both codes look to show that the car was flashed\modded\chipped. After I found this out, I called a BMW dealership and had them run the VIN to see if it was still under the HPFP and Wastegate warranties and it still was.

Finally, the techs noticed a rattle on cold start that would disappear when the engine warmed up, which from searching this forum appears to be normal.

The car in generally seems fine apart from maintenance (new tires and brakes) but with these two issues in mind (the soft-modding and the cold-start rattle), are they something I need to be concerned about?

19.5 k seems pricy for an 07. You can probably get it cheaper.

HPFP and turbo waste gate (rattle) are both covered for quite some time, but I'd take it in to a BMW store asap to have both checked. Water pump is not going to be covered or cheap and neither will be bushings (I replaced the front passenger side ones (just shy of $1K). Neither will the very soon to be needed servicings. Tires are what they are, but OEM on the car will call for 18" tires and they should be run flat tires as putting a spare, mounted tire and jack and whatnot in your trunk will pretty well eat us what space there is back there. There are certainly less pricey tires to be found.

Otherwise, it seems like a reasonable car to buy based on what you've shared about it. Just be aware that the car is out of warranty and there's no such thing as inexpensive when it comes to having to fix things on these cars. I never tell anyone who's buying a 335i as a DD to buy a used one, much less a used one that's out of warranty and has no CPO protection either. Sure, you could buy a third party warranty. But you could also not buy such a thing and just buy a better car that is more reliable and less expensive to own. Some cars, regardless of the selling price are still not budget friendly vehicles. The 335i is just such a car.

All the best.

It just makes no sense to me to buy a sub-$20K used 335i. Nobody in that budget range is looking for a DD car that's expensive to maintain, yet a 335i is exactly that. It's one thing to have bought a 335 some years ago when it was one or two years old, or new, and keep it until it dies.

It makes perfect sense. Just bought a sub-20K 2008 335iX. Commute 500 miles weekly (mostly highway) round trip for a consulting project and it's more time effective to drive than fly. Traveling to an area with harsh winters so want AWD + snow tires for peace of mind.

As the owner of several M3s, I wanted something to get me through these miles and winter without sacrificing driving enjoyment during nicer weather, so something compact, fast, comfortable, refined, reliable, fun to drive, with relatively good gas mileage (no B7 S4), AWD and with a 6spd. Pretty much the ONLY car worth buying sub-20K that fits that criteria is a used 335.

Mine was a CPO car the end of 2012 the dealer sold for $32,800. Previous owner put 50K worth of highway miles on it in under a year. I'll probably add 25K or so before I sell it.

All it takes is one drive in a Honda, Lexus, or Subaru to realize how worth it the 2-4K/yr in maintenance these cars are.
