Not able to fill up gas tank

Recently I've noticed that I can't fill up my gas tank. The pumps stop like they normally would when the tank is full, but when I look at the gauge as I'm driving off it shows 3/4 full or somewhere around 3/4 full.
I went to another gas station and tried to top it off, but each time I started pumping the gas pump would shutoff like if it was full.
Is there some sensor which tells the gas pumps to shutoff which could be bad?
