335D px against 3000mile M3

Just rang up about a Black M3 with a few thousand on the clock up for £49999.
Started speaking to the Used car sales manager and his first offer for my fully loaded 335D M Sport Touring with 17000 on the clock was...................... £25000 .

When i say mine is fully loaded .... it is , the only thing it hasn't got are the electric seats and that special cruise control .

After i picked myself up from the floor i said i would be keeping my car , he then said let me just check and came back with an offer of £30000.

He had killed it from the start.

I just wish they would treat you with respect from the off instead of trying to see whether they can get away with taking the piss. It's so disappointing that this is so often the default setting (not always, but more often than not) and it makes the whole experience less pleasant than it needs to be. Well done for walking away. Will you be going back though?

No , but ive just had a offer of £32500 against another black one.

List for mine new was about £46000 , i paid £39000 i think ,so in my eyes after nearly a years driving thats only a £6500 loss.

All the M3's im looking at are £50000 so they've lost around £6000/£7000 already.

Shoundn't of started this me thinks!

The old tactic of a ridiculously low offer to panic and unnerve you, then a much better one.

The idea being that you jump at the better offer thinking that they are doing you a favour, without realising it's still low.

I got offered £19k for my 14 month old 330i with 28,000 miles. Needless to say ... I told them to bugger off.

I'll defend the dealer a bit here. I assume you were just a stranger phoning up out of the blue. If so, no one, in any line of sales I've known will treat you as a potential live customer in comparison with you standing in front of them. Wrong it may be but that's the way it goes.

If you had turned up with your own car shiny and gleaming and told him you wanted the M3, I would bet you a dollar that his first offer would not have been £25k. NFS's comments would still apply but the process might have been a bit more believable. The guy shot himself in the foot, that is clear.
I don't know how far north you go but my local dealer has a black and an alpine white (or is it silver?) M3 with tiny miles and round the £50k mark.
I have to say - for the black one especially, if my grown up kids had been financially independent of me, I would have bought it on the spot!

No defence for that dealer - You should treat every phonecall as a potential customer and give them 100% attention from the off, I always do, and the customers appreciate it. It builds trust between the dealer and the customer.

This dealer has clearly shot himself in the foot and lost a sale from it. And the worst thing was, he then came back with an offer of £5k more than his original one - What a f%ckin liberty - As Miss Tate would say!

Once you loose a customer, you'll never get them back!!!!

Did the dealer offer 25k after ...

a) you describing the whole spec and his going away to check his glasses guide / the official dealer buyer or was it
b) an off the cuff "335d minimum is 25k let me check with options/spec..".

If its the former, then how rude, if the latter then don't be too offended.

32.5k from a dealer sounds like a great offer - you may want to check if he'd give you that as a straight sale (i.e. not buying the M3) to get an idea for what he's willing to give away on the M3 - and use this to bargain.

He used the Vin to get the Spec before he made the offer .
He was flustered straight away when he new he had killed it by making that offer and tried to rescue the sale by saying wait a minute on the phone when i wanted to get off the phone straight away. Less than 45 seconds later the offer was £5000 higher with the ability to get more in his voice.

I didn't even want to try , its not like there are just a few M3's about to choose from.

Scoot,

A 2000 mile ex demo E92 M3 recently sold for £46,400 at the BCA auction. They're an awesome car, but I wouldn't rush into changing your 335d for one just yet.

I personally would wait for more used M3 models to hit the market. That will test how strong the market really is and also reveal the consequences of this feared spending slow down. If in the next 6months people close their wallets, due to high energy costs and mortgage payments, dealers will bite your arm off when you make an offer. That would be in stark contrast to the complete piss taking described above.
