N55 Turbo inlet diameter?? Custom inlet discussion

I was looking into building a custom inlet pipe, does anyone know the ID of our turbo? I already ordered this: http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2537146/

I didn't realize that gasket was a separate piece from the stock inlet until I did some research on realoem. My thinking is that I could just slip that over a piece of metal tube such as: http://www.siliconeintakes.com/turbo...ing-p-111.html with one of lips cut off. Previously I was considering hacking up the stock inlet pipe but since you can get the gasket by itself there should be no reason unless it's some really odd size.

From there I'm planning to just clamp on the appropriate silicone tube to reach upwards to the rest of the intake. I'm thinking 2* 45 deg bends so it's a more shallow curve, plus whatever straight piece is needed to extend it.

Not that I don't think their product is worth the money, obviously there is a lot of work that goes into them plus the R&D costs. However, I enjoy the DIY route and with the exception of the necessary couplers, I believe building it mostly out of silicone would be superior.

Assembling the pipe should be trivial and as a bonus I estimate the parts should cost less than 100$.

did you ever build something? I had a smoke test ran and they mentioned that the OEM plastic turbo inlet and connection were leaking.

I am very interested in something like this...

holy sticker shock on that inlet, Batman!

did you do the install? I was hoping to find close-ups of how the inlet attaches to the turbo to see if a silicone coupler would work. Did you snap any pics by any chance?

Just an FYI, smoke testing with the Pure inlet pipe also leaks. You need to get a new oem gasket and build it up a little under that gasket to ensure the intake pipe is tight. Lots of issues as nothing really clamps together like standard tbolt clamps.

The inlet goes into the turbo, not around like a normal inlet. There is a gasket/o-ring on the outside of the inlet where it attaches to the turbo. I wanted to make my own but ended up buying the Pure inlet. Let me know if you need measurements of the inlet, can easily take them.

I have a leak at the turbo inlet with the stock pipe. I bought a new gasket and the single bolt but what is really holding this all together? I think the bolt just holds the whole run of tubing to the block to reduce overall movement.

The gasket needs to be thicker or the inlet pipe needs to be a little bit wider or the intake pipe smaller... would be nice to just make a nice short intake off the inlet with a maf sensor.
I built the inlet pipe up with a few wraps of tape, then put the new gasket on and it seals tightly and no more leaks under smoke testing.

so there is no clamp or screws or anything actually holding the inlet into the turbo? just the friction of the rubber gasket is holding it??

Yes, why do you think there needs to be anything else? It is on the vacuum side, it doesn't see any pressure. As long as it is snug there wont be any leaks or problems.

That leak is unregistered airflow by MAF sensor...

My point is, why do you think it is leaking? How can you actually test it. Of course it will pop off if you pressurize it, it isn't meant to see pressure.

Well, I suppose if it's under vacuum it's essentially negative pressure. Air could be pulled in just as it would go out.

I was running basically the unregistered air code. P112F I think?

Anyways, took it to my local indy shop who did a smoke test and found the leak was at the turbo inlet.

I also changed my charge pipe about 2 weeks ago. there is definitely an inlet leak because the smoke test is very low pressure and it was coming out there. But, it also follows the path of least resistance. I could fix that and then run another test to find a leak elsewhere...

and as far was what holds it in, I know its not under pressure but along the same path, the other pieces of the "intake system" are held with clamps and not just friction type connections. Just wondering if there was something I wasn't seeing in the actual inlet.

Well, I swapped out the inlet gasket and built up the top section of the inlet with a few laps of tape before putting the intake tube back in. I guess it's time for another smoke test to see if this all worked

sorry if you don't mind me asking you guys, what is supposed to be securing the inlet, i noticed that the inlet is loose on mine and tucked out. I notice a little stud on the turbo that sticks out, is there a bracket holding it down? It's either stripped or gone from mine. Noticed it when I was doing the waterpump replacement.

That was my question too. The actual 90degree elbow portion of the inlet just pushes into the turbo with a rubber gasket holding it. Then a single 10mm bolt holds it in place against the block.

That's interesting... A single 10mm nut?

Well instead of just having just a 10mm bolt holding it in place, I fabricated a boomerang looking bracket to hold it in place with a 10mm nut and washer.
