BMW sales slow, Pre-registering loads

Been looking on the websites of my local dealers and they all have loads of pre-registered cars immediately available. Obviously loads registered for the end of September.

Lots of nice stuff too that I would have assumed would be in decent demand like the new Tourings including a 330d. Also a few 640d Gran Coupes, an 135i and one dealer even has 3 pre-reg M5s!

Must be struggling a bit for numbers ............

Maybe people have been put off by the fact that they are so easy to steal

On a serious note, we are still in the middle of a recession and no one knows if we are going to be pulling through anytime soon, most predictions seem to be saying the exact opposite and the market segment that BMW are in will be hit the worst so I don't think people will be too keen to splash out £30k plus on a new Beemer.

All the F30 stock is the olympics cars. Rip the vinyls off give them a hoover and sell on. They always planned to do it.

It's also why they are so cheap. Cars paid for by uk taxpayer already. Double profit. Heh.

I was pretty sure that BMW paid LOCOG a large sum of money for their cars to be the ones used not the other way around

The Telegraph has it nailed:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...strations.html

Extract:

However, John Leech, KPMG’s UK head of automotive, said figures over recent months painted an overly positive picture.

Taking some of the shine off the numbers he said carmakers were incentivising dealers to register vehicles before they have arranged a sale by offering pre-registration bonuses.

“Dealers then tend to offer these cars to consumers as nearly-new but they are included in the official new car sales figures.

“KPMG’s estimate is that the new car sales figures for the year are approximately 5pc overstated by pre-registrations which suggests that the overall market has actually been flat year-to-date,” Mr Leech said.

I too have heard BMW do this to help increase their sales figures, then sell all the pre reg ones for a discount on the quiet so as to not dilute the prestigious brand image.

Not sure if its true just what ive heard

The Olympic cars are being offered first to many of the games volunteer drivers via a website to which they are given log in details. Don't know if they are only going to drivers or all games volunteers. They are being released on this site in batches. Also I don't think the taxpayer has paid for these motors, rather that BMW have paid to be official car supplier was my understanding.

I'd imagine the Olympic cars to be mostly 316 & 318's.

I think you're right Del.

Apparently one (BMW + driver) went to pick up Usain Bolt,he politely declined, saying "Thanks but I can get there quicker".

If they had a nice 320d Touring or 330d touring F series I'd trade my E91 325d in for it. Had a look at my local dealer, and they ain't got any!

Nope these are pre-reg cars ie. brand new with zero miles. There are loads of used F30s coming from the source you mention.

Also lots of much nicer stuff than 318 and 320s.
