Pacific Raceways (Kent, WA) Test'n'Tune with V4

Today went a lot better than last week, but I found out that the stock DV definitely don't cut it. I couldn't run much over 18psi peak without floating and overshoot, and there's probably a bit even lower than that. So I just kept it there even with race + meth. Aggression floated around 0.5-1.5 and IC between 0-12% (at 18psi).

Also found out that I need traction, but that's no surprise! Got a lot of runs in today for launch practice, but I can't seem to break into 1.9's, even with the Michelin PS2 non-RFT's. Had a blast nonetheless.

I also gotta hand it to Shiv for outstanding customer service. Over the past two weeks, he's answered my emails within minutes even at 11PM or later; and today at the track he had no problem helping me over phone/text for the 5+ hours I was there.

Mods:
* Newest V4 maps/firmware (not the unreleased WG Autotune ones)
* Full bolt-on (see sig) + 70/30 meth/distilled
* 100 Sunoco and 101 Trick gas
* Street tires
* Open diff
* Stock DV

Conditions:
* Pacific Raceways (10ft above sea level)
* Start Time: 64.9F, 68% humidity, 29.97in, DA +525
* End Time: 61.0F, 78% humidity, 29.95in, DA +293

My runs (best to worst ET, even the embarrassing ones!):
1. 12.338@117.95 - 2.137 60ft - 18psi (2nd to the last run of the day)
2. 12.395@117.70 - 2.122 60ft - 18psi
3. 12.398@115.86 - 2.039 60ft - 18psi
4. 12.474@116.51 - 2.134 60ft - 18psi
5. 12.551@113.66 - 2.033 60ft - 17psi
6. 12.576@113.85 - 2.086 60ft - 17psi
7. 12.648@115.02 - 2.133 60ft - 18psi
8. 12.710@115.00 - 2.139 60ft - 18psi
9. 12.711@113.93 - 2.090 60ft - 19psi (this run the DV problem became obvious!)
10. 12.724@116.44 - 2.223 60ft - 18psi
11. 12.725@114.49 - 2.133 60ft - 17psi
12. 12.858@114.02 - 2.284 60ft - 17psi
13. 13.011@114.74 - 2.390 60ft - 18psi (LOL)
14. 13.262@115.08 - 2.459 60ft - 18psi (Double LOL)

2. 12.395@117.70 - 2.122 60ft - 18psi
3. 12.474@116.51 - 2.134 60ft - 18psi

14. 12.551@113.66 - 2.033 60ft - 17psi

by the looks of your trap speeds, your stock bypass valves were floating in every run. That's why your mph was all over the place. You'll be shocked at what happens when you upgrade your valves. On a 6MT, they are critical at higher boost levels. You'll probably pick up 1-2mph from your best run and all your trap speeds will be within 1mph of each other. Good driving though!

Exactly what Shiv said. He's betting 120+ with the new DV. Interesting because I had read a lot about the stock DV being satisfactory even at high boost levels.

Thanks! To clarify, I was running progressive mapping last week, and ran straight map 2 today. OK with the race + meth combo.

Couldn't go over about 1500 and rolling onto throttle without spinning/hop.

Yep... if you do a static pressure test, they will take a lot of pressure before unseating. The problem is that once they unseat fully and discharge the air (as they do in a 6MT after every shift), they don't reseating quickly at higher boost pressures. So they essentially leak for most of the next gear which kills performance and makes the car stumble which probably explains some of those low trap runs. Being a plastic piston with a flexible shaft, it's almost random with respect to how it will behave once pushed to higher boost levels 16+psi.

On a dyno, it's not a problem because there is no shifting. They remain seated happily throughout the run. But on the road/track when they are constantly opening/closing, it's a completely different situation. If you go with the Forge bypass valves, make sure you use the yellow springs. The softer springs are too soft and will result in the same problem you are having with the stock valves

Great traps and times. Pretty impressive that you ran your best of the day near the end. Its been my experience that the stock DVs are more than sufficient. I trap 121-122 with boost holding well, but I do have an AT so it may have something to do with it.

Grats again! 11s are in your future with a 1.7 60 foot.

Yep, would only open if I took my foot off the throttle. I suffer from no leakage on stock DVs push high psi which was the point I was making.

Good info about the DV, thanks. Precisely what was happening, especially during that high boost run. Third gear felt like an earthquake.

wow, my friend those are awesome numbers and you got 14 runs, I should have went. Drag radials, may be LSD and weight reduction and your probably in the 11's. You're probably the fastest e92 in PNW.

yes get the new DV's, they helped my car out back in the day.

Terry is convinced the stock DV's are fine even at high boost levels, but he always drives an auto.

I immediately saw more stable and repeatable boost even at 15psi w the Forge units I was running.

get em.

Nice runs Eric - So you went from "nah - I'm just gonna do an exhaust" to all the way to Meth aye? hehe

Omg i need to go back to PNW - at least you can still make decent runs this time of year up there. Screw shooting for fast times in 90+ weather and full humidity out here in the midwest..

Hey dude, how have you been? We were just talking about you last week at the track wondering what you've been up to.
