This is awesome. A few automotive magazines were able to get behind the wheel of the all new uprated 335is coupe. The car itself is set to debut at the New York Autoshow ( the eternal home of the E90 )

Read the review: Automobile Magazine
Selected quotes from the test drive:

Quote:
The heart of the new "s" model is a modified version of the twin-turbo in-line six that will soon be discontinued in the 335i. Software tweaks have allowed power to be increased from 300 to 320 hp while torque rises 32 lb-ft to a total of 332 lb-ft. BMW predicts that quite a few buyers of the 335is will end up taking their cars to the track at some point. To compensate for the extra abuse, there's a second water cooler, a new oil cooler, and a heavy-duty cooling fan.
Quote:
Outside of the M3, this is the first 3-series (and only for the immediate future) to receive the DCT gearbox, and it makes a convincing argument as to why you should skip the standard six-speed manual. The speed of an upshift, the beautiful rev match of a downshift, and the constant smoothness prove to be unflappable
Quote:
When thrown into corners, the 335is surprises with a feeling of engineered lightness
Quote:
From behind the wheel, we're totally sold on the 335is.
Quote:
the cosmetic M Sport package can be had for $3250 on top of the car's $43,525 sticker. That leaves a $3750 difference with the $50,525 335is coupe paired to a manual transmission.
Quote:
The 335is convertible will arrive first in April with a price of $59,075. The coupe then goes on sale in June. BMW says a 335is sedan will not be built.

Did I read $50,525? For an almost outgoing product. Ouch.

This is basically a 335i with the BMW Performance Power Kit and optional DCT, no?

I was spot-on with the price. It maps with the Z4 35i -> 35is price increase, and is pretty fair pricing IMHO.

Yeah, most of the BMW fan sites kept saying no 6MT. But this article repeatedly talks about a 6MT and optional DCT. Hmm..

OK looks like there is a 6MT after all!

I think this isn't a final version of the car, because it's a coupe 335is and it has fog lights.

No, that's the MSRP of a stripper 335i w/ M-Sport.

Actually, if that $50k base for the 335is does NOT come with DCT standard, then the pricing is a bit steep.

Oops my bad, read that part too fast.

I'm used to Euro Delivery prices and not US MSRP.

All manufacturers try to introduce a "special" trim toward the end of a model's production run to keep the consumer interested.

As far as price, no manufacturer is going to bargain price a vehicle anywhere in the car's lifecycle.

So this is the version of the 335 that should have come out first. In essence, BMW 335 with performance software, increased cooling, and close to msport styling.

Might as well pay $9,000 more and get the M3. This is turning out to be like the 911 Carrera and the Carrera S (Except with even more difference).

think about it though, its a 335 coupe (43k) with sport suspension, performance exhaust (1200), performance engine pkg (2000), and well call it a "unique" m-sport aero pkg (3300) + the interior goodies m-sport comes with

if you bought a 335 w m-sport and added exhaust, and the engine upgrade u would be around 50k if not higher ... right?

... i guesstimated on the math in my head so tell me if im way off here

some auto mags claiming 344hp - taking into account the performance exhaust ...

"The German automaker BMW has come up with a solution for enthusiasts who wish they could afford to get behind the wheel of a track tuned M3 but are willing to settle for a twin turbocharged straight six substitute, they will be happy to hear that there will be a new high performance addition to the 3-Series lineup. The 335is will undergo the same treatment as the Z4 SDrive35is and will debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show and slotted between the current 300 HP 335i and the 400 HP M3.

The BMW 335is will be offered in both coupe and convertible bodies dressed up with some fancy go fast parts in the rear with a set of black chrome exhaust pipes protruding through a body colored diffuser while riding on a set of 18 inch Ferric Grey alloys. While the new Bimmer retains the 3.0 Liter inline six cylinder engine with a pair of turbochargers hanging off to one side developing as much as 344 HP and 332 ft-lb of torque mated to either a six speed manual or an optional seven speed double clutch transmission, it does get a new set of stylish pipes letting the lump breathe a little easier. The added boost and free flowing sport tuned exhaust means that 0 to 60 MPH times will be around 4.5 seconds.

Updated 01/20/10: Here are the first official images of the future BMW 335is. We will have the final specs revealed on January 22nd. Stay tuned!"

This is kind of tacky:

One of the BMW PowerPoint decks listed this interior trim as special for the 335is. I hope it's not the only option
