Tyres.... will these do?

I got a tyre question.... So many numbers & letters = confusion

I need new front tyres for my MV3s.

Tyres on at the mo: Brigdestone 225/40/18 88Y re05a

Question is, will these do?

http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/tyres/...-40WR18-92W-xl

They are XL & have a lower speed rating, so can I fit these?

Cheers

There is no legal requirement to fit a particular speed rating but your insurance company might object if you fit anything lower than what BMW specify.

What you have at the moment isn't the issue, it's what BMW suggest. Maybe it says in your handbook?

The new 3 series comes with W-rated tyres so it look like Y maybe overkill.

any reason to go with the Bridgestones? They are not that well rated and other better tyres are available for the same price.

Also you do realise those Bridgestones are non runflat, yes?

I know Bridgestones aren't that highly rated, but from experience they do last ages and have stiff sidewalls if that's what you're into. On my E92 I've done 25k and still got 3-4mm on the back and 6-7mm on the fronts. Had the non rft RE050a on previous car and they lasted ages too.

From my point of view overall I'd say no.

The only slight difference perhaps could lie in the compound perhaps the efficiency labels re noise and wet weather performance might differ slightly from say the same tyre with/without OE manufacturer designation. Tyres are a science and seem to be getting all the more technical. I remember searching for a 20" tyre for an X5 and was well and truly confused by 5 different options for same tyre size/same manufacturer.

It's OE selected by certain manufacturers, when I order tyres and quite a size a few times I'm told Mercedes, Porsche OE fitment when quoted then I tell them what car it's going on to cover all the base's but if the size, speed rating stacks up you're going to be OK.

OE labelling = Marketing

Apparently the * marked tyres for BMW have thicker inner sidewalls to deal with the camber for BMWs and as such are designed by BMW. Funny thing is * marked tyres are only ever ones BMW sell as part of the car, so I'd say this is BS. BMW's are a huge market for tyres so manufacturers would start producing tyres suitable "for BMW's" too.

If you read through all the marketing BS all it boils down to is that they are "recommended by BMW". Essentially just a tie in deal between BMW and a specific tyre IMO.

Any manufacturer that thinks 19" run-flats are there best thing for their car is talking about their ass.
