Winter / tire dilemma, advice needed.

So here's the deal... I live in SE Michigan (downtown Detroit) and winter is coming quick. I'm trying to decide if I should: a) buy all-season or snow tires for my e90, or b) buy a winter beater (probably '00-'05 Jeep Cherokee).

For one though, I don't know if the all-season Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires are good enough for midwest winter? Anyone have experience with them please share.

Two, I don't know if I want to buy a crappy will probably need some work high mileage Cherokee. My commute to work is very, very short at .6 miles... but the days I need to go to the grocery store / run errands, visit mom are the days I'm worried about.

My car is a '07 335i. Maybe I should've bought an xi...

I live in Ontario and ran my 07 335i last year with 18" winters. No issue at all. I drive about 15-20km a day for commuting.

I used WinterClaw tires as I've used them on my last 3 vehicles. They're ice rated and cheap.

My only advice, keep the traction on unless you're looking to have some fun...I was surprised how well the car behaved. With traction off it was ridiculous, but what do you expect when you're spinning one wheel.

snow tires for sure. buying a beater will be expensive ( insurance, gas, maintenance)

Thanks for the insight! I've heard BMW's are not too bad because they're nearly 50/50 weight distribution too but I just wanted to get some additional opinions here.. I don't want to look like a jackass trying to go a 1/4 mile in snow.

Anyone run the Continentals in the winter? I'd like to get rid of the run-flats really...

I'm running the DWS and they're decent in the snow. Plenty of grip and stopping power if you drive careful enough. I've driven them through fresh snow as well as treated and plowed snow. I like them it used to be that all seasons were a compromise, but these tire's perform incredibly well and perform better than the stock RFT's in the summer. Of course though a dedicated summer and winter will perform better, but I'm happy with mine.

I'd recommend getting winter tires. All-seasons are no-seasons. Run summer tires most of the year and then the winter tires in winter.

You don't need xi. All Volvos were rwd and Michigan is a joke compared to Sweden. BMW has 50/50 weight balance. If you put winter tires on you will be golden. Be smart and modulate your throttle on slippery roads, take it easy. Tires make all the difference. I have rwd also and Blizaak LM-25 rft in Philly. Car is beast on snowy roads. Just my 2c...

I ordered a set through Tire Rack right to Basney BMW. They are mounting in Nov and storing my summers for 20 bucks until spring.... You can get rims, tpms, and tires for around 1300....then just drive safe.

+100 snow tires! Get a dedicated 17" wheelset. It'll pay for itself after a couple of seasons of not having to pay for mounting and balancing. I found a used set of OE 17's on this forum or Tire rack sells 17's that fit.

As the others have stated, a set of winter tires will more than likely be a more economical effective solution.

Gary, for the 335i the tirerack website only lists the Pirelli winter tires. Is ok to specifically run Blizzak WS-70's 225/40/18 fronts and 255/35/18 rears? Or is there a different size/setup I should go with?

Thanks.

Fyi cherokees only made up to 2002 (I think?) Unless you mean Grand Cherokee. 2000+ 4.0 heads are known to crack. I love my 99 but am still putting winter tires on my 335 because it is so much more civilized. Don't forget to factor in catch up maintenance on the Heep - there's a lot of fluids to change at a minimum, and it's at least 10 years old.
