Seems like its almost impossible to retrofit anything without any drawbacks.
Not sure if I should praise BMW or hate them for it.

As stated before... only your dealer -and your relationship to your dealer- will determine if they will go the extra mile to transfer the ESN from a TCU to a Combox.

Is it actually done AT the dealer then with their computers or is it some central database?

Surprised that no one has found a way around this with all the coding capabilities of some super users

This may have proven to be too easy. I simply just called BMW assist and told them I needed to update my IMEI number with them. The guy who answered seemed fairly non-plussed about it and just did it. He said I need to wait a couple of days for it to register.

We shall see if that did in fact work.

Does he need to do anything besides update the IMEI number?

did this work? I would really like to retrofit the latest meda+assist, but without activation, not so good. (really want sent to car from google)
