Car Damaged on Highway, Seeking Advice

Yesterday while driving north on I-35 in San Antonio, something flew out of the back of a pick up truck in front of me and hit my hood. It happened so quick, that there was no time to avoid the object and I couldnt make out exactly what it was, but it was cylindrical in shape and about 2-3 inches in diameter.

After the object hit my hood, I took down the guy's plate number and pulled to the side of the road to assess the damage. There are 2 major dents on my hood and several small ones and paint has been chipped/cracked.

I have no idea how to proceed with this, does anyone have advice or any insight to this sort of thing?

First thing to do is take a few pictures and contact your insurance company with all the information you've gathered. You may also want to contact the SAPD and give them the guy's license number, although it's questionable whether there's anything they can cite the guy for. He probably has no idea what happened, but at the very least, you should be able to get his name and address for your insurer to use to contact him. From your description, whatever hit you could have been a piece of pipe or a beer can.

Make sure you explain to the insurance company that the object was still moving when you hit it, and not fell out of the truck, stopped, then you hit it. Since it hit your hood that should be obvious, but it'll make the difference between being in collision and comprehensive coverage.

thanks for the replies guys. i spoke with my insurance company, explained the situation to them and essentially nothing can be done. If I want to file a claim it'll be covered under comprehensive and they'll obv. pick up the bill after my deductible.

aside from that, they made it pretty clear that filing a police report will yield nothing since the burden of proof is on me to prove something flew out of this guy's truck and hit my car. and proving that is nearly impossible without a witness or a written confession from the owner-who probably doesnt even know it happened.

so looks like i'm screwed...
