Update...

Collected the car from woods today following what I was hoping to be a simple readjustment of the wastegates.

As suspected the linkage on the wastegate itself is toast and has a stupid amount of play in it. So much so that it's impossible to set the wastegates up properly as with each open & close of the wastegate it seats in a totally different position and refuses to seal properly.

So unfortunately it's new turbos for me, had considered a wastegate upgrade from TD but as mine are on 83k I would prefer brand new units. I'm prob only gonna keep it for another couple of years do hopefully the oem wastegates will hold until then.

Now I just need to find £1500... Cry!!

Shit! Sorry to hear that mate.

Having mine looked at on Wednesday..

If mine is the same i'll likely ask them to adjust it as well as possible, refit standard dp's, remove mods and then trade it in.

£1500 is all in for new turbo's fitted!!

Got to the bottom of my raised engine temps also today, was stuck in centre if London today bumper to bumper for a good hour and the temp went just passed 120c. Noticed that the fan didn't kick in once so hopefully just a loose connection n all will be sorted.

Good luck on wed Phil, be gutted for u if you have to ditch it after the time n money invested.

I'm considering just biting the bullet and going for Vargas stage 2s unless I can cure it by checking the waste gates are operating correctly

I replaced my turbos because they were smoking badly...

When the new turbos were fitted
I was still getting low boost and overshoots - in the end it was a vacuum issue - new canisters, lines and solenoids sorted it.

Did you replace the lines from the solenoids to the turbos?

Morning Phil, had a go at replacing the front 2 lines last night, damn those lines are on tight! Do you know if you have to cut them off?

Yep replaced all lines. Front turbo is possible. Rear turbo I replaced as much as I could and used a brass connector to link with the remaining hose.

I used a Stanley knife to slice the ends off the nipples. You don't want to break anything there - expensive.

Another one of us with new turbos that rattle! WTF is going on? If they are new and warranty replacements have you complained and asked what they will do about it? I suppose they would blame downpipes/remap or something?

I have come to terms with the fact that mine are not actually that loud when revving in neutral (I think I was going mad and doing it in the garage diddn't help). Mine is only really noticeable on part throttle with the window down. The downpipes make a big difference.

Are you sure its wg rattle?

Pull the vacuum cap next to the Air filter. Blue arrow in below image

Can you hear the vacuum escape? At idle and revving with this unplugged you'll hear the wastegates rattling. Is this the noise you hear?

If you have the same sound with it sealed, then you have a vacuum leak. New turbos don't rattle under correct vacuum.

Sweet I'll try that. They are silent on cold start and idle and very quiet in neutral. Just very slight almost in audible rattle which is apparently 'normal' with downpipes.

I't must be something more simple like you suggest. Especially considering the turbos were rebuilt, set up and fitted twice.

The rattle was virtually silent... When it was stock.
I went back to BMW and they said they would look at it again, but said it was normal for the 335i.

The minute I put the Downpipes on, the rattle was a lot louder under all conditions. When the car is cold, it rattles very loudly, the minute the engine is warmed up, and the jb4 engages, the rattle goes away a lot more, but is still there.

As you say, when revving in a confined space, the rattle is embarrassing...

I will give this a go today... Pulling my front bumper off and playing with my headlights.

I think it is the wastegates rattle, it sounds very similar to how my car sounded before it went in for new turbos! It may even be louder hah, but I didn't have Downpipes with the old turbos.

I always hit 15-16 psi of boost on map 5 with DCI and DPs. Never experienced any loss of power or anything...touch wood.

Mine rattle is quite pronounced in neutrl whilst revving. Obviously only on deacceleration

Just to check though phil. Is it ok to drive a bit with the vacuum cap pulled? That is when I hear the rattle so I will need to do that to replicate it. I suppose it is no different to having a leak which might have been the case for a while now anyway.

Phil, if you get a free moment, do you think I could come and meet you so you can have a listen? Get your 2 cents. We both know you can not get a great idea from videos...

I've promised to take a look at Sparky's car.

We could have a mini meet at my house!

Would be a month or so's time though - I'm busy with holidays, rugby matches and stag do's!

I only recommend this to listen to the noise at idle - so you understand what the rattle sounds like. I wouldnt recommend you drive like this - you would have zero boost...
